Default Overheating at idle, but not at crusing...?

Hey All,

I finally got my 86 N/A running! Its been almost 9 months, but its done! I took it out for a spin today, and after awhile the temp gauge began climbing at idle (after about 15-20 min...) then once I got to crusing speed it went back down..Is it the radatior fan/clutch fan? Or do I have more problems... I have a vauge idea of what it may be, but I wanna make sure with you guys!

-Thanks!
Mike

your fans may not be working... if you go ~25 or over it will cool the coolant enough to keep you cool. if your timing belt is too loose, it may not turn your water pump enough at low rpms.

check the fans for proper operation first. on our 85.5 the relay failed on all the time, and drained the battery. they fail totally off too.

Figured the fans...The timing belt was done right before I let the car sit for 9 months! It should still be okay though, right? I'll drive it around for a few miles/minutes to see if it does it again, as my Z sometimes the gauge will shoot up then settle back down where it should be...

-Thanks!

I'd have the T-belt inspected and retensioned. The smooth side does drive the water pump.

Also watch the fans as the car warms up. Should come on full at about the third mark on the temp gauge.

What kind of outside temps? When you say it climbs at idle, up to the red mark? If its just going up to the high white mark at idle on a real hot day, thats probably isnt a big concern.

As long as the timing belt was done correctly, no problem with letting it sit 9 months.

Check to make sure the fans are running first. They are electric motors that run off a temp switch through a relay, no clutches used. If they are not running, it could be the fan relay (in the fuse box) or also the fan switch, which is the temp sender mounted on the radiator. Doubtful both fan motors failed at the same time.

The cars are also prone to trapping air in the coolant system (more so on Turbos). If youve flushed/changed the coolant recently, may be worth bleeding again. They will overheat a little when this happens.

And there is always a possibility the gage/temp sender is having a problem too, something to consider if youre having the gage jump around or change readings quickly.

I have seen this on a 1987 944 and a 1988 924S. Both times it was that the cars were low on coolant and their was air in the system.
