I'm looking for solid information regarding the 944 automatic transaxles.

I'd like to know

what the torque capabilities are.

some real tech info regarding the clutch packs, posible upgrades.

what other cars they were offed in.

Thanks

heres my contribution:
Automatic Ratios
1st Gear: 2.714:1
2nd Gear: 1.500:1
3rd Gear: 1.000:1
Reverse: 2.428:1
Axle Ratio: 3.455:1

Its a slow box.

compare to
MANUAL TRANSMISSION GEAR RATIOS
1st Gear: 3.600:1
2nd Gear: 2.125:1
3rd Gear: 1.458:1
4th Gear: 1.071:1
5th Gear: 0.729:1
Reverse: 3.500:1
Axle Ratio: 3.889:1

Ive been threatening to try to put together an auto for my girls with an updated tranny. The 5hp19fl seems like it could make a fairly close match to the manual box's ratios.

ZF 5hp19fl
1 ------ 3.67
2 ------ 1.99
3 ------ 1.41
4 ------ 1.00
5 ------ 0.74

final drive gear sets are available for this ZF platform....
1060 235 087 (Bevel Gear Set) 3.40 VW/Audi
1060 235 094 (Bevel Gear Set) 4.20 Porsche
1060 235 101 (Bevel Gear Set) 3.09 VW/Audi
1060 235 103 (Bevel Gear Set) 3.20 VW/Audi
1060 235 105 (Bevel Gear Set) 3.30 VW/Audi
1060 235 109 (Bevel Gear Set) 4.16 Porsche
1060 235 111 (Bevel Gear Set 3.73 VW/Audi
1060 235 184 (Bevel Gear Set) 3.09 VW/Audi (GMR)

Thanks so much. Those ratios are very good for what I do regularly. The turbo first gear is too low and I need to be able to still run 140 in the quarter.

I'm seriously considering converting for next year. Real problem is tg as the I can't do 1/2 and mile events.

IIRC these are based on a Mercedes box right? Depending on which one there may actually be some stuff out there for it.

does the 5hp19fl seem like it'd fit the 944 easily enough?

Im not entirely sure it wont bolt in. The 5hp19fl is used in the boxster. Im pretty sure its the same face pattern. The axle distance appear very close to stock. I dont know....Im blissfully optimistic. We hope to find an auto to try to swap next summer. My girls test drove a stock 944 auto and were unimpressed. Hopefully we will be able to work out a solution around the 5hp19.

When in doubt, gear ratios should be in the owner's manual. You should ensure the quoted ratios apply to your year (if there were any different ones).

As for torque limitations, I did read (on the internet, mind you, where everything is true) that someone claimed the auto box is the strongest (in terms of torque capability) transmission put into the 924/944. If that's the case, I don't know if it is stronger than the 968 01E.

You can try contacting California Motorsports (click) about torque limitations. (No affiliation with that company). No idea if they have experience with the automagic boxes.

Fun fact: I think Porsche still holds the record for the stoutest manual gearbox ever put into regular production. And it's 40 years old!
