Default Racers, 2 questions:

Looking to shed some poundage:Are 944 brake dust shields useful/required or can we toss them?

Gel battery location: Behind passenger seat or in "das boot"? (any pics/**** to support your statement is welcome).

Cheers!

Read your rules before relocating the battery as well.

Remember also when you relocate the battery that you will be running some heavy 00 cable to your kill switch and components so your not necessarily "saving" any weight.

+1 on the comment above. Just get a light weight battery, and no the dust shields are not needed.

Even if the new battery and cable equals the same weight as the original battery, moving it behind the passenger seat will help shift some weight from up high and forward to low and in the middle (if the rules allow)

How much weight do you need to lose? If you are looking for a few pounds, that is one thing. If you are looking for bunches, that's another set of questions. You can get lightweight batteries that weigh around 12-13 pounds. I had a Braille that didn't last as long as I'd hoped, but I think that a portion of that was on me for not properly keeping it charged on the battery tender. I replaced it with this, which looks identical to the Braille except for the stickers, and it is half the cost: http://www.batteriesplus.com/product...M--14--US.aspx

SO far, so good.

The Odyssey I think PC680 is a GREAT option. Bought one 10 years ago, ended up not using it, so I gave it to 944hal, who has been running it since probably 2007 or so.

Big chunks of weight that don't cost much are gutting the car properly.....meaning you take out the dash so you can get to the 20 pounds of carpet and insulation you otherwise would not be able to access, after you take out the other 150 pounds you can reach. Carbon cannister. All the front end wiring and headlights, the HVAC system if you still have it in there. It is easy to get big bunches out of these cars without spending money. If you are ready to spend money, lexan. I took a lot of weight out of the hood by just running a fiberglass skin, and not the whole hood.

Don't the dust shields help with cooling?

No, they help with preventing water from splashing on hot brake rotors. If anything they prevent cooling, making the pocket of air between the shield and the rotor an insulator.

P.S. I agree with F1rocks. A light-weight battery in the stock location is preferred: a) to minimize heavy copper cable; b) to keep the battery out of the passenger compartment, where something might short it out and/or if the battery ever came loose, it could be a projectile; c) no need to spend the time doing that work - spend the time with a real performance upgrade.

You guys give the best answers. Thank you for your valuable input. Does anyone run a lightweight battery on a daily driver? That's probably asking for troubles eh?
