The guy who is selling it is one of my indy mechanics. He built it himself, for himself. English is his second language, hence the poor grammar. Trust me, he knows what he has, down to every nut, hose, and bolt.

As to the other details in you post... good questions that I will add to my list. I know he has the answers, I just didn't know enough what questions to ask him.

Date of most recent head gasket, rod bearings, and engine seals?
That much boost has maintenance requirements beyond typical, yes?

Just to be on the safe side, this fall I will do the belts, WP, etc....

Pretty darn reliable if you ask me.

If it was actual mileage it would have another digit on the price tag. Have you driven the car yet? A lot will really depend on your driving impressions. How was the idle, the acceleration and braking for starters.

Are there more pictures? To be honest for 10k and another engine there HAS to be a story here.

So, are you saying that seems like a good price? I know the guy selling the car. He's one of those sorts who buys and sells cars on a whim. He wants a 997, and he has a bunch of cars and doesn't use this one any more.

No, I didn't drive it yet. I'm sure I can get him to throw in some free maintenance if I find any issues. It has new brakes.

Seems like a good deal to me, but as I stated in the original post, I don't know squat about 951's.

Hey, another question... how bad is the turbo lag in these? One guy told me it's pretty bad, and he said that at 400 HP, this car would be tough to handle as the turbo kicks in.

Pretty darn reliable if you ask me.

your sample is small.

if you ain't been daily/long-distance driving for a good while, then you're still a new customer.

come back when you got 222 k miles and 200 500~1000 mile+ drives under your belt

and then you can post your losses....

like the cores of your typical Seyfert Galaxies....

the pet may be in a resting phase. but the dragon will return to eat soon.

I have had mine for over 11 years and it is pretty reliable as well. As long as you keep up with the normal repairs etc... it will take care of you.

As for the lag, stock they are not terrible, but noticeable. A modded car depends on to many things to comment. One more comment is the lag is very annoying in stop and go heavy traffic unless you keep the revs up.

Hey guys, I went to look at the 951 again. Here's some more info:
  • Koni adjustable shocks
  • Custom-fabricated exhaust, dual waste gate, just passed smog
  • Vitesse Racing tune chip (chip is out temporarily so it would pass smog)
  • Brand new brakes and rotors
  • New Momo seats
  • Rear bumper delete (lighter weight bumper installed)
  • 3-piece wheels (I forgot the brand, he says they were $750 each)
  • New rubber door/window seals
  • New OEM fuel injectors
  • New timing sensors
  • Larger turbo
  • Claimed 400 HP
  • All new hoses, belts, head gasket, numerous items.
  • Odometer says 140,738 miles, but that's for the car as a whole. The rebuilt motor, etc. has maybe 15K miles on it.
  • Spare fully rebuilt engine and other misc. spare part come with the car.
  • Asking $9,300. He wants a quick sale, because he's hot for a 997 that is on the market. Actually, he wantes me to buy three of his cars in a bundle: The 951, a 1995 BMW 850ci (in excellent shape), and a 2009 Mini Cooper, all for $34k.

I went through the receipts, so he does have all of the items well-documented.

What's you opinion of the price he's asking for the 951?

Below is a video clip I made and a few pix.

damn the 850 is gorgeous,. 400hp with the stock air box, I dunno?? nothing special on the suspension, wheels and seats are nice but for that car putting out all that claimed HP without a dyno sheet, no way. Does it have LSD? About the price with the extra engine and if you want a track car is ok.

Hmmm...... not sure about LSD for that car... a good question I will ask.

Yeah, not sure if I believe 400 HP without seeing a dyno sheet either, but I don't much care if it's somewhat lower than that.

Hey, wanna buy the 850ci if I get it? Good price to you. It's in amazing condition, and was about $100K back in '94 as far as I can tell from internet research.

For the 951, I want a street-legal car that I can track, too.

Actually, I would prefer to have the rear seats in, rather than the weight saving from the delete. I'm no where near good enough on the track that the weight saving would make a difference.

Decisions... decisions..... I'm not really an impulse buyer, but this car really has my interest. If only it were red.

I wonder how hard it would be to sell if I find that it just isn't for me?

The deal is great, again, IF you have the time & knowledge to DIY. I have a Vitesse Stage 3R on mine and it's unbelievably complicated. Put it this way there's a separate computer and all the electronics are redone. No one can work on this (no dealer and not a lot of Indy's). Mine is tuned to 350 but I can hook up a laptop with the software and tune it to 400. As far as selling is concerned, forget about it. I put over $30k into mine, zero bites at $25, I think I'd be lucky to get $10. Would I repeat, no. You better like it or you'll get murdered on the sale.

Without knowing more about the other cars it's hard to say if that's a good deal or not. Honestly, I'm not sure all 3 for $34K is a good deal. Just a quick check of KBB.com shows that's about $4k too much. Then you have to part with the other two cars that you just paid full private party retail. You'd most likely not recoup all your money which makes the 951 that much more expensive.

Bottom line, he's found a 997 around the $34K mark that he's hot to get and selling all three of these cars gets him his car, keeps him from having to deal with selling the BMW and Mini AND sells the 951 plus extras. It's a definite win for him but not really for you.
