Thing with a so called "totally rebuilt" spare engine is that so many guys have been burned with stuff that people say " running perfect" or "just rebuilt".Then they buy them and they are crap. I think the saying goes" the rebuild is as good as the guy rebuilding it". Especially if he is rebuilding it for sale…or is he rebuilding it for himself.Big difference on care and what parts went to the inside of the engine.
The indy built it for himself. I have no doubt at all that it is a very high quality build. He is far from the cheapest shop around, but this guy does everything to a very high standard.

If you are looking to do some track the 951 is outstanding - very well behaved and will bail you out when you reach the limits of your ability.
I've done some track ride-alongs in 944s and have been VERY impressed regarding their handling. That's why I like the 951... a bit more power to go with that handling, and larger brakes than the 944.

Try to talk him down some and get it going, it will be fun car. The parts? you'll have to list them up. There are a lot of 944 parts floating around so you may not sell everything instantly, but certain things can be worth keeping as well. If you get some pics of what they are should you get the car we can help out with that.

And if you really sort it out and become great track driver, you can aspire to this...

If it is an '86 951, you need to update the spindles/hubs/rotors before you track it.

^^^ OK, something I need to ask about. Thanks! Actually, the Indy who is selling it says he tracked it (I don't know how often), so I assume this was done, but will ask. So that I don't sound like a total doofus to him, what about those items needs updating and why?

I too can dream of possessing a full race budget and have a properly boosted 944T running, proper....

good days; one of the most expensive engines to run the lifespan of the hone/rings/crank/bearings.

bad days; headgaskets, endless tuning, failed bearings, engine pulls. etc. you die.

...what the hell do I know? not much. observation, notes, archiving the cataclysms, watching the cars drive good men insane, leaving wistfully/defeated/divorced/dead.... never to be heard from again. personal experience? daily driving a 968 to 200 k miles (only 2/3 as bad), near financial ruin, etc.

I thought he said that they all eventually get it in the end.

The 86 spindles are not as strong and have failed after extensive track use, the 87+ spindle is stronger. You need the hubs and rotors to go with it because Porsche changed them in 87 to put ABS on the car. 86 turbo's are their own world on that front as a one year only setup, the a-arms are also unique to the 85.5-86 NA/Turbo.

They are not money pits..

If you buy a cheap one (like what most people do here) yes they'll be "money pits" because they've got a hack job. And because they got it cheap, parts will seem very expensive.

Pay real money for one, and you'll love it. keep it maintained and nothing will go wrong with it.

I've had my 86 951 for 25 years and I still love the way it looks. You don't see too many on the road these days and it gets more looks than my 993. The comments about fixing things as they break is important. Or otherwise the problems will start piling up. I budget $2000/year for maintenance and insurance on this car. I have 200k plus on it, so some years it is more and some it is less than 2k, but that is a good average over 25 years of ownership as it is always something that goes.

Hey guys,

Here's the car I've been looking at. What do you think based on the available info?

He claims 400 HP. I need to ask about that odometer... I wonder if that's orig. miles, or does he mean miles on that motor? Not sure.

The car looks pretty but for a 951 fanatic the information provided is vague and scary.
things I would like to know about the car.
1) Maintenance records
2)who built or tune the car
3)what software is he running
4)a detailed description of the mods

If he is running 400hp how? boost level, components, a/f ratio etc etc.

and a dyno sheet.

there is not such thing as dual stage wastegate, he means a dual port. a lot of typos for a guy that selling a 400hp 951 and no idea what he has.
