Default How much fiberglass cloth is needed to wrap headers?

How many feet of header wrap does it generally take to wrap a 951 header till it reaches the crossover/header flanges? I'm guessing at least 20 feet?

this just made me think...
header wrap is just woven fiberglass in narrow strips.

you can buy woven fiberglass for projects for about $7 for a ~10sqft section (~2.5x4ft)...cut that into strips 2" wide...15 strips @ 4 ft ea = 60 linear ft...

just figure a way to join the pieces together (lots of tie wire!)

Knowing Doug, I'm expecting to see SS tie wraps...

Yesterday I was reading an older thread and a guy with a V8 944 racecar had what appeared to be silicone aircraft ducting (SCEET) clamped around his Y-pipe...probably to keep heat in the tube...but that stuff is rated to 550F, how hot are the exhaust pipes?

In a turbo application, MUCH hotter than that Spencer. A turbo header under load can easily reach well over 1200 degrees, I've personally opened my hood after a hard pull at night and seen my header glowing a dull cherry red which is ~1000 F.

Lots of guys from all different car cirles say wrapping the header is a terrible idea, but is the issue just rusting? Obviously my OEM inconel header is never going to rust.. So, to wrap or not to wrap?

The issues seem to come down to moisture-holding = rust and cloth can absorb oil = fire hazard.

I don't know if I buy into moisture-holding when wrapped around a 900* pipe.

Paint the headers with a rust-preventive paint, then wrap them.

Or skip straight to ceramic coating...

I wrapped my headers despite some of the opinions. I agree Ceramic coat is great.....but people have been wrapping headers for years. It can't be 'that' bad! I did not wrap the cross over pipe however.....thinking about moisture (though my car rarely sees rain).

I've got a full roll of it on my desk. I bought 2 rolls....only needed 1. Still in it's wrapping.

Well if your headers are wrapped and your cam tower gasket decides to go south, you will have a lovely material to catch all of that leaking oil and light on fire in a nastier way. Not a fan of the idea of wrapping the header with how common cam tower leaks are on the 8v. :P

The obvious trick here is to create an 'oilduct,' if you will, that routes oil -- in the case of a leak -- back into the crankcase.

You should also look at a few YouTube videos showing oil soaked wraps bursting into flames before you do this.
