968 motor into a 944

Not new to wrenching, but somewhat new to Porsche. Essentially, I will be buying a 944 in the next few weeks, hoping for a post 1985 but any will do. I plan on autocrossing/driving her for the summer to give me time to get used to the way she drives and then in the fall/winter doing a somewhat common motor swap like I said in the above, the 3.0L 4 banger into an n/a 944. Basically, what I want/need to know is how difficult is the swap? Will it bolt right up to the stock n/a transmission? I have seen many threads, but none really answered the questions I have. I am also planning on after the swap to do a Garrett turbo. What kind of mods to the 3.0L will I need to do to get it to run with the turbo? I am following a similar engine build to that of revline racing on YouTube. Thanks, hope to get one soon and join the Porsche family.

You don't want to do a 968 swap and then decide to add a turbo. The compression is too high to run boost. So you don't really need a 968 motor, you need a 3.0 block and crank. Everything else will be different if adding a turbo along with a turbo wiring harness ect. If you plan to keep it naturally aspirated everything bolts up fairly simple with a 968 wire harness. If your interested pm me I have everything you need for a 3.0 na swap

if you're set on having a 968 engine running a turbo to be a 944 street performer
a 3.0 is a good choice; but it's not going to leave you with much flexibility for autocross/Saturday racing.
if you ultimately go big 3.0 turbo, staying within moderate boost levels is solid.
expensive, and not cheap to maintain, but very reliable.
I would avoid a high boost project. (i.e./it is best to stay between 375~425 crank hp).
a 944 with a blown engine will be your best bet on an inexpensive car to begin the project.
FYI, in a few weeks, TPC/Eric Hill (located a few miles south of Fort Worth, TX) will pull my (968) engine.
he's installing my V8.
the oem engine runs fine, but spent it's last 45 k miles (now at 196 k) with a partially blown headgasket, but sealed with liquid gasket sealer. the hg sealer kept the motor driving strong for dozens of long highway and transcon trips of 1000+ miles.... but, the H20 pump is failing and won't make but a few dozen miles before (the pump) seizes.... other than that, the engine is in good shape. consumes about 1/2 quart of M1 through a 7,500 mile cycle.
despite having had the headgasket problem I don't have any reason to believe there is any cylinder scoring, as there's no blowby or smoking. it continues to be a good hauler.... and I'm sure it would be a fun engine to drive hard (as is) to failure (after doing the gasket and pump), or do a partial or full rebuild/rod bearings/set up turbine, etc.
as it is, with just a little work, you could probably drive this engine another 150~200 k miles,
before requiring rebuild, easily.
I will have the following items available.
1. the complete engine with RS Barn ac delete, but no PS pump. ac brackets are available.
2. the wiring harness and dme,
3. an almost new sachs clutch.
4. 2 968 oem radiators. one radiator has 45 k miles and is pristine...
the other radiator has 110 k miles and was exposed to head gasket sealer.
5. radiator fan rack; 1 fan is quiet. the other is slightly noisy but runs ok.
for openers, you need to change to turbo rods and run lower compression high-$$$ pistons....
then pick up a lot of 944 turbo parts from Lart or other turbo parts dealer.

post a new thread on the Turbo forum and the guys will pitch in their knowledge, years of experience, etc.
good luck.
