Default 1988 944 ?

How can one tell a 1988 944 is an S or not or are all 1988 944s an S? Thanks

Easiest way is to look at the engine head

Where and what should I be looking for on the head to determine the 944 in question is an S?

Google a few pics, they have a different air box set up and a 16 valve head.

Thank you. I'm aware of the 8v and the 16v. I was not sure of the production details.

Good. 8v is a base model, 16v is an S series

From the drivers seat, 6800 rpm red line is a good indiactor that's it's an S.

Does both methods posted here stand true even if the year isn't a 1988?

Yes...works for the '87 model, as well.

Yeah, the head difference is the same for all years... The 16v came out in 87.

And also, if the badges on the car say "944S", that helps too, yaknow...

The side trim on the front fender will also read "16 Ventiler" if it's an S (or S2).
