Default trouble with motor mounts.

Hey all!

I just did my rod bearings, and I'm having trouble getting my crossmember back up. The drivers side motor mount went in no problem, but the passenger side is off by like half an inch. These are the replacement mounts from Lindsey Racing.

They were bolted to the crossmember before I lifted it into place. What am I missing? Did I do something wrong or is there a trick for new mounts?

Thanks!!

Not sure why it should be that far off. Is it possible that the engine has moved a bit in case you will have to move it sideways to get it lined up. One side of the cross member is slotted, so you could have the engine out of location and still have that side of the cross member bolted up. Try loosening up the mounts at the engine and the cross member, and don't tighten up the cross member until everything else is together.

And, as suggested in next post: Keep ALL bolts loose until cross member and motor mounts have been installed.

X10 on the above. Any time you mess with the cross member it is a PITA to get aligned. Use a short 2' crowbar to help shift the engine around to where you can insert the bolts. MB968 last sentence should be adhered to. Keep ALL bolts loose until cross member and motor mounts have been installed.

Cheers,
Larry

This is a general "best practice". Always make sure ALL bolts are started before tightening ANY of them up.

Default figured it out!

So the problem I had was that the motor mounts weren't seated all the way down into the crossmember, which led to weird angles for the bolt holes.

I seated them by bolting the bottom of the mount to the xmember, then bolting the whole thing up and letting the engine rest it's weight on the for a moment. After that I lifted the engine, loosened the crossmember and the mounts were magically seated and bolted up with no major problem.

Thanks for the tips everyone!

Since so much of the suspension is tied to the crossmember, is an alignment necessary?

Yes, after undoing the crossmember from the chassis, an alignment will be necessary.

+1 yeah, you'll for sure want an alignment.
