Ok, i have some questions about the eclipse and talons. My friend says you can run 20psi reliably on a daily driver, stock mind you. How tuff are these dsm headgaskets? I know these cars are known for the bang for the buck, but when does the quality of the car and realiability become a factor? Is anybody familiar with these cars. I'm kinda tired of the, my car is still a porsche and yours isn't thing. Basically i wanna know how long these things last when these people out there turn up the boost and gain mad amounts of horsepower? Why can't we do that?

I've worked on, tuned, and driven my friend's 93 eclipse. Entirely stock long block. He runs as much as 24 psi and hasn't had any failures in almost 5 years.
The car has a clipped "big" 16G. He has upgraded the injectors, fuel pump, and added an SAFC. He also has a large frontmount IC and water injection. He uses a ~25 shot of nitrous to spool the turbo on the line and for that extra kick in the pants.
The car has run 12.9s If he'd break down and get some slicks, he could avoid the AWD wheelspin he gets through the 60' mark.

I have a friend with a 95 Talon tsi. He runs about 17psi around the street and will crank it up to 21 when needed. He's running a big 16g with all the supporting mods and has had no problems. man, those awd launches...

I'm surprised to hear of people not having problems with DSMs. The crank walking is a known problem. I have a friend with a 20+ psi DSM and he's had the engine apart twice. I'm not saying they are junk by a long shot, but they aren't bulletproof either.

They are heavy, but when they are well modified and tuned, they can be formidable.

Hey, little info for you guys.
I drive a 91 Eclipse GSX, 16psi daily. Without a datalogger its hard to tell if I could run 20 and not over extend the stock 450 injectors.
- But ya, 20 pounds is easily done by these blocks. (just needs fuel)
- Any car can crankwalk, but only the 7-bolt motors do it all the time. The 7 bolt motor apears in the 2g, 95-99. It is also in the 1g 93-94, but crankwalk isnt as common.
Non Turbo Turbo FWD Turbo AWD
Laser RS Laser RS Turbo Laser RS Turbo AWD
Eclipse GS Eclipse GST Eclipse GSX
Talon ESi Talon TSi Talon TSi AWD

Oh ya,
The last owner did a 13.9 1/4 mile @ 18psi in my car. I have yet to take it to the track.
And sorry about the listing of which is the turbo/non turbo. forgot that this forum doesnt put in the correct html character for a space.
http://1000q.dsm.org if you care to see a better list.

Not a stupid question. Its rare in most cars.
Crankwalk is when the crank accually moves around left to right (horizontal motor) so much that the clutch/flywheel cannot grab.
Kindof funny to see though...Make a left/right turn and it moves away from the clutch and wont engage, so you have to make the oposite turn for the clutch to grab.
