Introducing myself and my new-to-me 968
Just bought this 968 this week. Have been riding motorcycles pretty much exclusively for most all of my driving life (have always had a truck to tow the race bikes though). After one summer on the moto in FL I decided I'd try an arrangement where I don't get soaked everyday. Always liked the 944/951 and 968 quite a lot, particularly in white, so when a white 968 popped up on craigslist I couldn't resist.
Overall it seems a reasonably well kept driver, though miles are higher than I'd have liked (140k), condition was the best I've seen in a while. My first three projects are addressing an oil leak (not sure where it's coming from--not spewing out but enough to leave a mess on the underside of the oilpan and surrounding area), installing a working radio (it had a sony unit that didn't work) and fixing up a spot on the top of the driver's side doorpanel where the vinyl is pealing away by the window (any advice on the doorpanel? It's perfect except for this one area).
I also want to install new struts and shocks as they appear to be original and are quite soft. It will mostly be a driver/around town car and I might try a trackday at Sebring eventually. A controlled, relatively comfortable ride is probably what I'm after. Any recommendations? I probably need to stay at stock height to remain speedbump and driveway friendly.
I'm located in the Tampa area (moved from NoVA a year ago for work) and looking forward meeting everyone at the get together in April! Also game to meetup for coffee or something prior if anyone is in the area.
Anyone know which wheels these are? The tires are 205/17 and 255/17.

Welcome again and nice 968!
I look forward to meeting you next month for the 944 Rally in Orlando. Not sure if you've seen this info regarding the Tampa pre-meet or not, but check it out! https://rennlist.com/forums/10272278-post18.html
PM Jason if you need more info or his phone number. He is a great 944 guy to keep in touch with in the Tampa area and has helped me out in the past.

Congrats on your new purchase, the 968 is a lovely car to drive.
There are a couple common spots for oil leaks -- the balance shafts don't have the best seals, especially towards the back of the engine. They are a pain to change out with the engine in the car so the preferred fix is a good cleaning and some RTV around the outside. The front sides are known for leaks as well. The other common leak is the oil pan gasket. Changing that is more complicated as it requires supporting the engine and dropping the front cross-member.
Also check the power steering lines, they are known to spring leaks and can create quite a mess.

Here are a couple of quick interior shots:
Here you can see I've already removed the not-completely-functional sony headunit
Here you can see where the door panel needs work
And a closer view of the doorpanel troubles
As you can see the seats are starting to show wear as well. I'll eventually get the leather re-covered. In the interim, any recommendation for a quick slip-on seat cover that fits these well and doesn't look too horrible? The steering wheel is in pretty good shape, I stuck that sock on it over the weekend while I was fiddling with it so I didn't get the wheel dirty.

Congrats on your purchase, always loved the white 968's. If you can't find a used door panel or get the one you have fixed feel free to PM us and I will see if we can get a new one.

Welcome to RL & congrats on your find, look nice. For your suspension need you could inquire about it from those guys, competitive pricing plus tons of knowledge about your car www.paragon-products.com Now about the leaks it could very well be coming from your lower balance shaft housing,do you have any records of the TB/ BSB & WP being done lately "those should be look at 35K-40K miles or every four years or so don't matter the mileage on them. Also very very important are your "chain-tensioner & lower /upper pads" the camhafts chain ride on nylon pads which with age will get brittle & has a tendency to break which could cause serious & expensive damage to your head,if no records of that being done I'll seriously will take a look at them because of the car mileage.Sending you a pic of what I'm talking about.

my Gates belts (968) are good for 60~70 k, easy. i'm at 60 k now and they still look brand spanking new... and if that ain't enough, they cost pennies on the dollar what the dealer charges. you 944 guys should look into the new, long-life Gates belts. i think they're rated for like, 70 k miles or more.

A gates belt was put in recently by the PO (sticker under the hood, plus PO's claim--PO couldn't find his documentation though but I'm pretty sure he wasn't being shady, just disorganized). Looks like the belt went in about 6 months and 8k miles ago. Not sure if the WP, etc., was done with it--hopefully he'll locate those records and I'll know more in the near future.
I suspect the timing chain/pads/variocam have not been inspected or replaced so I will definitely have a look asap. The chain looks oddly like a motorcycle drive chain. Curious choice for that application.
