I was actually looking at getting a 914 (for a local beater series--that's technically a VW, so it applies here, right? hehe) or a '99 Miata (for life, the universe, everything, hoonage and groceries) before the 944 came up for sale.
I'm still thinking about picking up a Miata. I want a track car that I don't have to trailer everywhere and the Lancer I have as my only street-legal car likes to eat 18" tires like they're made out of delicious white chocolate raspberry cheesecake with extra whipped cream on top. Aaaaarrghh.
I keep threatening to replace the Lancer with a krypton or isotope green Elise. I need to hoard a bit more money away before that becomes a credible threat, though.

Hmmmm... old thread... however interesting...
Lots of options in a relatively new GT out there at this price point -
Jag XJS, XK, XKR
BMW 850, M5, M3, M6
MB SL 320/500/600
You could even find a decent (ugh wait for it) Ferrari Mondial or Dino GT4 2+2.
I just went through this very exercise and ended up with my Turbo S. Not sorry in the slightest. Believe it or not the other option I was wavering on was in the next price point up - a Ferrari 400GT 5-speed. A carbed 12 cylinder. Lovely sound.

If for some reason I couldn't have Porsches I would make the switch to BMW. I'm a sucker for the E92, so I'd wait till the price came down to $19k. The Ferrari 308 is pretty cool, but I'm just not a Ferrari guy. I watched Steve McQueen's Le Mans, I'm forever indifferent towards them now.
I would love an MG Midget! My dad had one when I was a little kid, loved that car! It'd be a sad lonely road without Porsche's though. Heck, I might even have a bank account with money in it...

As much as I want to say a BMW or MG, I would strongly consider a mustang for its value. Either the 03-05 cobra or a mix and match project. I've always thought it would be fun to get a 1999-2004 and install an IRS (bolt in) and something like a 3v 5.4. Both swaps would be pretty cheap. It wouldn't drive like a Porsche, but it would be hard to argue with the value and useability.

Well, Smokey and The Bandit was on TV tonight so I really want a '77 Trans-Am with a 6.6L under the hood. But tomorrow I'll probably want a DeLorean or something silly.

Subjective threads with no wrong answers ( like oil threads?) tend to get the highest response rates..
E30 M3
E36 328is
E36 M3
Pre-transverse F. Mondial
Gotta have my 2+2 man..

Well earlier in the thread I overspent the budget .
But here a couple of weeks ago I bought the below new 2013 302 Boss Mustang . Yes in Greeeeen . While it was over the budget of the OP, I think you could find one used for less . When they are a few years old anyway . They are sure worth having . Mine wont be one of them for sale .![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

All you guys and your foreign cars. Pffft....
DeTomaso Pantera for me. American V8 muscle with Italian styling. Yep..
Granted 20k will only get you a rust bucket Pantera, but hey, it's a start.
A car that may just be a bigger money pit than an old Porsche. lol

Either a late 90's M3 or a 99 Miata with roll brand, hardtop for track use. Or if new....and affordable, a MX5 Club Sport. Love the new Boxster but not in my budget.
