944 V6. Who's done it?
http://www.944transformations.com/ho...d=49&Itemid=37
Well, has anyone on RL gone through with this who can give a review? I searched and didn't find anything.
I don't want this to turn into a "Why would you put an GM V6 in a 944?? Flame, flame, flame.." thread, although that's probably what it'll turn into. This looks like a legitimate alternative to a V8, eliminating the need for rear end, brakes, wheels/tires upgrades. I understand S2 and 968 swaps will give similar power numbers, but those are still 20+ year old motors. I've looked and have found 30-50k 3800 motors for just over $1k. This may make sense for 944 NAs that don't want to go all in with their wallets and big power of an LSx. Obviously a swap isn't "cheap" by any means, but with another 100 hp and an engine from this century it looks worth it. I love the handling of my track 944 and I'm not looking to sell it and buy a 951, or go buy a Corvette.

I wouldn't bother with a L26..
Holden use to use them as their standard engine until the series III then they've made their own engine which is smaller and better.
Because the standard cars are now older like 1992 - 2005 that use that engine, are now very cheap and a lot are used for first cars.
I have not seen anyone actually spend money doing those motors up (and this country isn't exactly a "*****" country either)
The only mods would be extractors (equal length headers) and a 2.5" exhaust. and they sound ****.
no one even bothers changing cams or head work.
By a good newer LS1 and drop it in there.. and be done with it if you're going to rip the old engine out.
If you want more power, IICR rogue tuning is working on supercharging an N/A with their new software to show you can get more power out of a N/A with out needing a re-tune.

There was a thread about a VR6 conversion a while back - looked like quite a good build, but I haven't seen an update on it in AGES.
I'd also agree in not bothering with the GM 3800 block - it's a bit of a disappointment.
The engine out of a FG Falcon XR6 Turbo however......
for clarification:

If I wanted power power I'd do a vortec 4.8 or something
Then if you did want something more later on the mods would be plentiful and cheap. I just can't see the reasoning behind a GM v6 swap.

Note: I've measured the engines and it can in fact fit. When my friend wraps his nispro stage 1 XR6 Turbo around a tree, I've got first bid on the engine.

The guy with the Buick V6 swap was Turbo Bob. Havn't seen him on here for a long time. He was at Fest about 5 years ago, and he was having ECM issues. Those motors can make big power, Kenny Duttweiler in California built a drag race motor that put out about 1200 HP. I used to have an '86 3.8 litre T-Type. and it hauled ***. Oiling on the turbo wasn't the best, they coked up pretty easily. The exhaust sound on them sounded a bit weird too.

Series III makes I think 240-260 depending if it's supercharged or not. I am open to an LS or other doable swaps, but want to make sure I review all of my options... V8 looks like a more tried and proven option, but the swaps do look pretty crammed in the engine bays. I would love to have space leftover!

the aftermarket for the 3800 is pretty huge, almost comparable to the V8 guys...with SC/turbo you can get into big numbers...the pontiac/buick guys with the 3.8SC motors with good intake/exhaust/pulley/tuning are well into the 400s for HP...torque is frightening.
turbos are another story...
as far as sound goes, they sound OK, not as good as a V8, but i wonder...could you build a set of "120* headers" (like 180* on a V8) to make a v6 resemble an I6? for those that dont know, you take the middle cylinder(s) of one side and tie to the outer ones of the other bank. evens out the exhaust pulses rather than having them bunch up.
