944 project needs and engine. How expensive of a fix
Hi, I've been looking for a nice n/a 1987 944 s and I found this one in guards red with a good body, interior and mechanicals, but the owner says the head is cracked and it needs a new engine. He's only asking $2,150 obo. Is it worth it to drop a new engine in and make it a street/track weekend ride? Any thoughts on how much it would cost. I do know a good Porsche specialist in my area. I'm also wondering if its worth the investment make it a project I do myself as a way of learning about the 944. As it now, I don't know much about repairing 944 myself, but I'm willing to learn. Your input would be most helpful.
Here's part of the ad " 1987 944 S (16 Valve) with 76,415 miles. Guards red with black leather interior. This car was my daily driver until the head cracked. It is in need of a new engine. The body is in good shape except for a small dent on the right fender. AC is ice cold. Fully working moon roof, global locking, all electrics except mirror adjusters. Good brakes and suspension; I'm asking $2150 OBO"

If you don't know much about these cars, an engine swap isn't a good starting point. If I were you I would look for a running vehicle you can try to maintain for a few extra thousand. Good luck.

You can either buy a car where someone else has fixed the problems or you can buy a car with problems and fix them yourself. The first option is usually the cheapest. That's why they say
There's nothing more expensive than a cheap Porsche

you could break the bank and do an LS1 kit for this car.....
i like that car with a monster Chevy motor.
in fact, i'd like to see all front engine, 4 cylinder P-cars to be running a good Detroit motor....

87 is a late offset car which is desireable. I would plan on $3000 for engine rebuild parts another $500 for a new clutch. If you plan to do the work your self there is a steep learning curve if you have never worked on one before. If you have to have the work done you will never make the numbers work on that deal. Spend the money to get a good running documented car and keep it maintained.

Where are you located? I've got spare parts coming out of my ears. I have a bare S head I'd sell pretty cheap. You'd need to pull some parts off of another head and have some machining work done, but it may be a very cost effective option for you. I've got an entire upper end for an S engine, as well (a second head, this one complete).
