I like the stock 951 config, but am not opposed to a really clean LS1 swap. I just feel like when you do that it looses some of the character of the car. Not that its a bad thing, just its not the same. I like driving a turbo car because it reminds me of a 2 stroke bike. Not a lot of bottom end, then BOOM it just pulls like a train and hold on. I love that.

I don't know, maybe it's because I was raised in NC where you are always surrounded by camaros and trucks that the american v8 sound just got old to me. The ls probably being one of the most meh sounding of them all, but hey when it comes to this it's 100% opinion.

A 951 has the sound of a spooling turbo, the opening of the wastegate, the dump of the bypass valve, and an exhaust when done right sounds pretty unique. It's a symphony rather than the same flat bwrruuuuum you get in a trailblazer.

I have driven a Miata with a 5.0L mustang engine. it was a hoot. First gear is pointless.

So the best solution is to jerk out the stupid morbid engine and slap in a nice modern digital timepiece that never misses.. What a very exciting and accurate hybrid that would be. If the first one wouldn't be so expensive, Id made one and give it to Ourundandina for birthday.
To compare a 944 motor to any mechanical watch after calling the 944 motor modern is rediculous.

Honestly, there isn't anything special about the 944 motor. 5 main bearings? that's because they took a shortcut so they could retain commonality with the 928 top end castings. Alusil? they gave up on that on the 911 after only a couple years. OHC driven by a timing belt? The VW van mill that it replaced had that.

i'm incredibly happy with my 968's exhaust sound on the highway. i'm going to miss it a lot. even the slight drone at 70 mph/2800 rpm. yep, full addict.... but just you all wait to hear the V8 after i run 2 resonators and the big Magnaflow out the back.

944 isnt even on their radar - now that my car has fresh paint on it when i roll to the dealer for whatever reason they try to sell me on a new carrera, because i HAVE to be loaded to keep the old beast chugging...

There is certainly a reason that it is so popular, no denying that. But at the end of the day it's still kind of pleb.
im slowly working on a bit of an alternative...dont worry.

Alusil is a good idea actually. Helps the bores stay in good shape. Nikasil is better, but you use what is available.

A lot of engines use a timing belt. only Recently have timing chains come to be a common thing again.

Thanks for the thread. It's encouraging to see this many enthusiastic people. The Chimera is in progress but doesn't like me messing with it in winter. Something about hibernation. It's getting tolerable in the garage now so time to kick the beast to life.

Default Lovin' mine

I got the LS2/3 968 out for a long drive after getting it aligned and it was a blast! My exhaust is 3.5" and consist of a Flowmaster Outlaw in the tunnel and a Magnaflow at the rear, it sounds great and quiet at cruising speed. Tomorrow I am going to put the splitter back on it was too low to get on the alignment rack today. Here some pics my son took with new his I-phone before we hit the road.

92MM built by Nick Williams it has a remote IAC motor to allow hood clearance. I had to build an adapter to angle it down as the LS3 intake flange aims upward.

thanks.

there's been some problems with some of the BBK throttle bodies, but i've heard they stop bogging after polishing.

i'm also running the LS3 heads and intake,

even after running Robert's bumpsteer kit, i know i'll be notching out a section of the bastard hood.

but i can re-inforce it with carbon to keep it from warping.

the dedicated cf hood will be next year some time.

If you go Drive by Wire you should have adequate hood clearance. I did not want a bump in the hood and should have converted to DBW but I had already build the TB adapter when I considered that option.
