Default Ignition Push Button Start

I was trying to figure out if I had an ignition switch problem when my ignition switch fell apart - problem confirmed!

Since this is a street legal track car I was thinking about going with a master electrical switch and push button start. I thought I saw a thread about this a here on RL recently but I can't find it.

Anyone have any information on replacing the ignition switch?

well replacing the stock switch is pretty easy- and it keeps people from easily stealing your car. I recently did a push button start in a track car and it wasnt terrible though. Basically in the harness to the switch there is a large red wire that is power to the switch- then another large red wire that goes to the starter solenoid. The rest go to the on/off switch. Check for continuity one may be a ground-I ran the power to one side of the button, then jumped from that to the top of the on/off switch. The other side of the button goes to the starter solenoid and the rest of the ign. wires go to the bottom of the on/off switch. _ this does work the same as a starter switch so if you hit the button with the car in gear it WILL move.

Thanks for the quick response. I have not removed the steering wheel lock at this point because I really just track the car. With a hidden cutoff switch and the steering wheel lock I should be good.

Do you have any recommendations for the amperage of the switches? I guess if I look at the fuse for the starter relay that would tell me the amps. I have the Porsche manuals so I can check out the electrical.

Parts source for the hardware? I was thinking about mounting where the radio normally is using a Lindsey gauge bracket.

I would suggest using the starter button switch to trigger a high amp relay rather than running all the current through switch, just to be safe and it will also give you a much larger range a switches to choose from as you can use switches with very low current handling. cool project and not to difficult IMO

Thanks - thats exactly the thread I was looking for. I should have specified "crazy schematic".

I was looking through some of my catalogs and Paragon has switches and panels with lights and switches already installed. Depending on what you want you can do a basic instal with just a toggle switch and push button for about $35 or get a panel and spend about $60. Compare this to $160 for an ignition switch from Pelican. I would probably want to do this regardless. The fact that I would not have to crawl under my dashboard just makes this more of a plus.

Cost me $20 and took about an hour...on a track car...I didn't bother to make it look fancy but it could have easily been made to look factory with the right parts. You do have to keep the key so you can unlock the steering lock.

These look like the same exact switches I got at NAPA the other day. About $18 total with tax. With one week to the first track day of the year I have to get this going!

You make them. not so hard.

all you need is a base plate (aluminium, stainless steel, carbon fiber ect)

* Toggle (on off) Switch
- 12v
- Fuel Pump
- Ignition
- (what ever else you want)
Missile Switch cover
Push to start button

Id love to have a push to start in my 951. it'll be cool. but if i was going to do it in my car, id use the blank on the centre consol and put another door lock switch (to use the red light) turn the key to the "on" position the red light turns on, push the button, car starts & Redlight turns off. turn the key off, car turns off.

I just made a plate which fits where the radio was at one time - bought a piece of steel at Home Depot - 10 gauge - and cut it with an abrasive cutting wheel. I'll post some pics when it is complete.

In the "crazy diagram" which is linked earlier in this thread there are two wires which are labeled IDK (I don't know); one is red/black and one is gray. When I hooked up the red/black wire my clock went on.

Does anyone know what the gray wire is for?
