I've been trying to avoid adding snaps as it will add a extra machine setup or using a fourth axis all of which adds time and cost to the machining, so the simple answer is yes but at a price. with the prototype I have currently the tray has not tried to move (I haven't rolled the car yet) it fits down pretty snugly.

If the aluminum is thick enough, I guess you could run a few screws into it to act as snap pins. I just wouldn't want them to protrude through to the inner compartment and show from the top.

Well see how this next prototype fits but currently I really don't think it needs to be retained.
If we use a under cut T cutter we can do some kind of snap detail with out another set up I'm just not sure of the variation vehicle to vehicle, obviously Porsche choice to put springs in to account for some variation.

I've been trying to come up with an idea for an ash tray delete, mostly because my lid rattles a lot. Plus I don't smoke so it's just a wasted/unused space.
I like that.

no pics handy but and interior is currently apart for a dash change etc. |I did one for my iphone. I cut the tray off of an iphone alarm clock that my daughter broke, cut away most of the ash tray and glued it in. Hard wired in a charger and it works nicely. It holds it securely but still works with my case on the iphone.
My first attempt used the bottom half of a case as the holder and that worked as well. Was very snug but not good if the phone was in a case.

I am in for one.......I use my iPhone for making calls and like having a dedicated spot to hold it when I drive......
Here is where I store my iPod which is dedicated to my car and never leaves unless I update it it or add music.

Here are some quick pics of the latest prototype.
One with a iphone in place and one in car after a very quick and rough blast from a spray can.
Next steps I'll use this one for a couple of days and then we will machine the first Aluminum parts hopefully next week.
