Default Ash Tray Replacement

Here are some pics of a little project to find some where to put my phone.
I've removed the ash tray and replaced it with this prototype tray which has a lip to hold the phone. The real one will be anodized aluminum.
This is sized for a HTC Thunderbolt but will also fit the i phone and leave space below for coins etc.
I've done this for my self but let me know what you think, would you buy one? and no I haven't worked out a price yet, but assume less than $50

Yeah it's 3dprint from Vflash, black anodized but we could do gold, red, clear etc.

I'll take a black one. You ought to make it so that an iPhone could be plugged in for the bottom for charging and top for iPod use.

I like the idea! Might be up for a black one depending on price.

Thanks for the input I'll find a I pod to try for fit, using it for a day I already have some detail changes to make before machining one.

Cool!

This looks like one of the cool projects Greg East would do.

I think it looks cool. Could you get one that would allow an iPhone to plugged in? I have thought maybe a holder similar to one on a iHome.

I'd be interested if it could be tweaked to fit an early car. And as for charging, I know some Verizon Android phones have a micro-USB on the side, so a small hole in the side of the tray big enough for a cable plug to pass through would suffice (cable could be hardwired to the car or just run from cig lighter through console).

Thanks for great input. I was initially going to do a place for a hard wired charger but there are just so many different plug locations it doesn't seem feasible but will give it more thought.

Does any body have a early car near sw Michigan? If so I'd like to measure it.

I like the idea, and thought about it myself, but if one were to get into a car accident, the phone would no longer be in that position, and you may be the only one available to call for help.

I'd take one in black for the iPhone if the price was reasonable.

So here's a screen shot modified to allow better charger access for i phones and others. I've also reduced the 'coin tray' size to make a larger ledge for smaller phones and i pods although they will slide around a little.

I was trying to keep it simple one size fits all to keep the cost down.

I took a look at the i home but unless I mis-understand it stands up which would be in the way of your arm when changing gear. To build in a charging plug (although nice) would mean a different version for every phone.

Under hard driving and breaking the phone stays in place but yes if you hit something it wouldn't ! Again trying to keep it simple one piece with out clips and or straps. Currently the tray just drops into where the ash tray was no clips.

I appreciate your interest and input, Thanks
