Default 250hp S2??

Hi Guys,

I’ve got a line on an 89 S2 engine (and parts car). I’m considering swapping out the 2.5L in my 85 944 and putting in the 3L S2 engine. This looks fairly easy and is a common swap. However, I want MORE power. The 3L engine needs to be freshen up while it’s out, so this is my opportunity for mods. I’ve seen the Michael Mount 330Hp build and another at 400hp, these are amazing, but way out of my range. My goal would be 250hp from the 208hp baseline. Any 3L guys out there care to offer any advice here? Finally, the easy question would be – Why not start with a 968 engine? Easy answer – Here in Canada, 968’s are rare, and very $$$. Add that it too would likely need to be freshen up, so it adds to the cost.
Thanks as always!
Gord.

do you want 250whp or at the flywheel?

I think my car is pretty quick for a S2 and I have a MSD ignition and coil, test pipe with a 951 rear exhaust, Firehawk chips and a KN filter.

I'd wait for the n-tune development, that and a few other external mods might be all you need.

it's big money working an n/a

4-1 equal length headers
2.5" exhaust
custom intake manifold build for higher rpm (5000-6000rpm)
a custom cam build for a higher rpm range (5000-6000rpm)

but you'll loose bottom end performance. and this stuff isn't what you would call "cheap"

buy a 968 head/dme/intake and a chip...sell the S2 head/stuff to someone doing a 3.0 16v turbo

Unless I am mistaken you also need the entire harness and MAF to make the 968 variocam work.

or just get a 968 engine add supercharger... and add the free-flow exhaust goodies.

For the first 30HP the easiest and most cost effective mod would be a 968 motor, DME, etc. For the rest you might spend $10K and still not get there, and you would have a loud, cammy beast of a car. For all the money time and trouble a V8 swap would be similar cost and effort and would for sure deliver the requested HP. As a bonus a V8 would have headroom for more mods eventually.

The best way forward IMO is to swap the driver into a car that makes the HP you want. A 32v or Euro S 928 is good value at that level of performance.

Cheers,
-Joel.

And even if it wasn't pretty quick, it SOUNDS awesome, especially at WOT in the upper RPM range.

This is the route to take, but I will add a couple of other points.
1. A tri-Y on a 4 banger can give about 99.9% of the performance as a 4 into 1 due to the firing order. Just and FYI should you find two options and costt is a major factor.
2. You need bigger valves. The 37mm intakes are on the small side for a 3.0L 4 cylinder. The 968 uses 39's. If you are going to fab an intake to tune it to a higher RPM, you will get much better results if you increase the valve size and port the runners to match.

If you're keeping the suspension, brakes and transmission stock, then stick with the 208 HP...
