Default mirror glass fell out

the mirror glass was loose on my 85 944, and before it actually fell out, i removed it from the mirror housing. after i clean it, whats the best way to reattach it to the mirror housing? based on the window sticker, the car has heated mirrors. are there any products that are excellent for that application or products to stay away from?

it's happened to a lot of people and I have heard of them using super glue, 2 part epoxy that is heat resistant (the mirrors are heated but i'm guessing a hot summer day in the sun they get warmer than they do from the heating element) even double sided tape.

stay away from hot glue

Some 2-part epoxies get pretty brittle. JB Weld seems to stay a bit better.

I wasn't sure whether to use super glue (basically the same as rear view mirror adhesive glue) or epoxy so I ended up using both. Epoxy all around the edges with some superglue in the middle. Belt and suspenders approach, I suppose. It's made it through three years, and yes I daily drive it including the winter.

thank you guys for the advice! i ended up removing it from the mirror housing, cleaning it and using a two part epoxy to reattach it.

mirror cleaned and ready to go (note the small amount of glue that was used from the factory on the upper and lower edge):

if only I was as lucky as you...

my driver's side mirror shattered into a hundred pieces as it hit the pavement in the gas station when I closed my door. Many concerned drivers thought I had just smashed my own window!

There is a large amount of adhesive from the factory. The backing plate isn't actually black where the glass attaches - that's the paint from the back of the mirror glass that failed causing it to come apart. When the mirror fell out on the driver's side, I peeled off the paint and stuck the glass on the adhesive that was left - it wasn't going anywhere anytime soon. When the passenger side fell out, it broke. At that point I just bought two new convex lenses and replaced both sides.

interesting to know about the black being the coating on the back of the glass. i thought it was part of the heating element. learn something new every day!!
