Default LS1 Swap Cost

Hey guys ive been wondering how much EVERYTHING would cost to swap an ls1 in my 84/5 speed 944? My friends and i are mechanically inclined, i was guessing around $10k? I have looked up a couple of kits for the swap, how much are the different engine options?

FWIW, ADMIN and XSCHOP are excellent vendors on that site. If you have access to a machine shop and can weld this could be a very cheap swap.

Best suggestion would be to start a thread on that board, much more specialized membership.

swaps can run anywhere between $6 k and about $25 k or more depending on many variables.

i'm in the middle of a swap project that will be about $ 29~30 k by the time it's completed.

feel free to pm.

Im just curious what exactly are you doing? Most conversions done by a shop are like $15k said and done. Are you doing a zr1 swap or something?

Also when will the car be done?

$10-15k by a shop gets you a better than a hack job look when complete. Cars are a system, and when you increase the performance by more than 100% A lot of support system upgrade or refresh is needed to make it reliable. These cars are 25yrs old, and once you start ripping things apart, things break, crumble/crack as they are removed. If you want it to look factory, or show car worthy (lots of stainless, aluminum, aeroquip fittings etc) that where the next $10k comes in.

If you haven't checked them out yet, Texas Performance Concepts has most of the stuff you need.

including the transmission i picked up (now sitting in a crate, ready to be shipped to Scott D. in Corpus Christi who last week, received the new 5th and 6th gears from Europe i purchased), my swap parts inventory has now passed 10 grand. my next paycheck will put me over the top for the LS3 crate, which i'll be purchasing in about 3 weeks from Crate Engine Depot in Grayslake, IL.... Eric shipped the oilpan and headers to Van's house friday.... including the engine, transmission and parts, head work that's going to be done to pass 500 hp, the breakdown looks something like this....

swap parts, hydroboost, custom hoses, fittings ................................. ~$5,500
headers, Y-pipe & exhaust..............................................................~$2 ,200
engine, w harness/comp, XSChop serpntin, ac, headwork, 'Fast'............~$10,400
transmission, parts, partial rebuild.....................................................~$5,700
Van's labor................................................................... ................~$4,500
odds and ends, engine tuning..........................................................~$1,000 ????

total................................................................... ............... about $29~30 K

wish i could have had it all done already but, hopefully, the swap will happen before the end of the summer.

While I havent done it in a Porsche, we are just finishing up our LS1 swap in my E36 BMW racecar.

We elected not to use the stock T56 transmission as it is simply way too big and heavy for what we needed out of a racecar, especially since we dont need any overdrives, much less two of them. We ended up buying a Tex Racing TR3 4spd dog box.

Bellhousing is a Quicktime, clutch and release bearing are Quartermaster, starter is stock, flywheel is a button style adapter which uses the stock automatic flexplate to bolt to and for the starter.

We are no longer using stock pedals/masters, instead going with a reasonably priced and extremely customizable Tilton floor mount pedal setup:

FWIW we are using a 3/4 MC for the clutch.

Our motor only cost me $1000, however, we have spent probably about $1000 in bolt ons - FAST fuel rail, Z06 intake manifold, Turnone power steering pump. We also needed custom long tube headers which were $1600. Engine mounts were $350. We built the transmission crossmember ourselves, wasnt too bad to do. Exhaust was $1500 (but then again ours is a very custom side exit using 4" oval tube and several mufflers). Total bill for the transmission and everything to get it in the car was about $5000. Driveshaft was about $500, custom built locally. ECU is stock, just had it flashed to remove the anti theft, rear O2 sensors, etc. - cost $100. We havent cut any corners but have a cheap junkyard motor in the car and it has EASILY cost $10000 in parts.

Best of luck with your project. We started it last night and it sounds AWESOME.
