The belt is 6 years old...pretty old. I'd change it...is it really worth the stress?

AFAIK rule of thumb is ~ 30k or 6 years whichever comes first...which is usually the 6 years...

Just replaced the belts on an '86 951 that I'm selling...same scenario...belts done in 04...

Dang, $1300 at a dealer. Thats a steal

However, its probably just for the belts and no new seals or water pump or anything.

I'd say go ahead and do it so you can stop worrying about it

Doing your Home work before you bought the car would have paid off. Time dosent matter? Its a rubber belt... like hell it doesnt matter. What did you pay for the car?

I understand that.that's why I asking the? Doesn't matter what I paid for the car.the car has lots of records and only has 18000 miles on timing-seals-water pump-ect.I asked the Porsche dealer were the work was done and they said age did not matter only mileage.but I will change it soon.

Change it. I recommend doing it yourself. Offer a free adult beverage or two here and you will have some folks begging to help you in San Diego. Buy a Kevlar timing belt and the tools. I did just my belts first time on my own with only manuals and Van's videos (downloaded from Youtube) to guide me and it was not bad at all. In a month or so I will go back in and replace the rollers and water pump.

Looking back now if I would have paid someone $1300 for the belt change I would be kicking myself in rear for wasting so much money on something that is very doable at home.

My .02 worth

for $1300 you could buy a very nice set of new tools from Sears, the P9201 tool and all of the specialty tools. It's intimidating but not hard. Do as suggested and see who'll come and supervise.

If you're somewhat handy with hand tools, fairly automotive knowledgeable and love to work on cars, the first time you do one of these the learning curve will go straight up. Then in about 1500 miles (assuming you don't get a kevlar belt) you'll need to recheck and probably tighten the tensioners it's be a snap! I'd do it regardless if it was Kevlar or not....can't hurt. Have fun. If I lived in SD I'd take you up on the beverages and help with the project.
