My indy quoted me just shy of $900 for the 60k on my 87 turbo. What are the advantages of a kevlar belt?

Ah...that explains the 'age not a concern' statement they made, it's a kevlar belt on it now.

Not that I COMPLETELY agree with that but it is true that age is not as big a concern with a kevlar belt. Kevlar breaks down MUCH slower than rubber over time. I know there will be alot of debate on this, but to me due to how critical the timing belt is on these cars personally I will always have a kevlar belt on mine.

When there is finally a kevlar balance shaft belt, it will be worth it. Because otherwise you're going to need to change the BS belt soon anyway. Ya dig?

Your telling me those Kevlar belts were out in 05? I dont remember that being an option when i was looking for the better timeingbelt in 08

Someone might be mistaken

I dont think a dealership would put a kevlar belt on a car.

My mechanic said he doesn't think the kevlar belt is worth the $100. He pointed out that while they're stronger and last longer, with my driving style and annual mileage, the odds of a normal belt going before the next replacement interval are astronomically small.

So, I'm inclined to give it a miss...

Nice 260. Ex-wife had one her Mom bought new, early 260, before the fat bumpers. Got stolen in Clarimont Mesa, woke up in time to see it backed out of driveway, and take off down road. Had just put a 280 motor and 5-speed in er. Only took cop 2 hrs to show up then she sat on couch and brushed doughnut crumbs off uniform onto our floor.
Never found it.
If there was a kevlar B/S belt, I would use both.

If it makes you feel any better. The material the kevlar belt is made out of...... (it has kevlar fabric woven into it but thats not really what makes it better) The rubber compound is the same as the ones used in newer cars that are 5 years 100k mile belts. Now.... if your balance shaft belt can last that long then we are talking longer service life.

For the record on the xterra site people are going 7 - 8 years between belt changes with the stock belt. (of course just like this car people arnt changing the belts and a few snap in that span of 120k miles.

Ditto to the kevlar B/S belt thing. Maybe we could ask Reenbay if there is any chance in hell of one being offered.

Sorry to hear about your 260, that sucks. My aunt owned a 280ZX when I was a kid, loved it.

As for "is the kevlar belt worth it", here is my thinking......when I was planning to buy another 944 I did ALOT of looking at cars on the internet while I was in Iraq from Aug 09 to July 10. I looked at cars all over the US, and there was ALWAYS part cars being offfered with 'timing belt broke', 'timing belt issue' etc being offered as parts cars. Second place was water pump issues. So I decided to put a kevlar belt in this one, if I hadn't it would always had been itching the back of my brain that I didn't use one.

I know they are expensive, but it was one of the very few parts of my build I was not going to cheap out on.

FWIW the Kevlar is only on the back. My 944S ate 9-10 teeth on the inside of the belt, and the rubber backing was intact...I cut it off to remove it.

So,I think I will tackle this job early Saturday morning, going with the stock belt for now,so do I really need a tensioner or can I do it by feel.

honestly you'll need some "feel" for the belt or a way of measuring it, but if you have tools to fix a 912 you have the tools to fix a 944. to do JUST belts takes nothing but normal stuff--10, 13,15mm sockets, same in wrenches, a couple others, etc.

Drop the belly pan (10mm bolts)
wind in the alt and A/C adjusters (wrenches)
remove belts
set motor to TDC (24? 27? mm socket for crank pulley nut, socket wrench)
remove airbox if it's in the way (not sure--have a turbo and a 16V car, and both are)
remove the front timing covers (10mm bolts)
check tension of current belts for reference
remove crank pulley if necessary for clearance to remove timing belt
recheck for TDC
loosen tensioning pulleys
remove belts
recheck for TDC
set marks according to the service manuals and about 1000 other sources
tension by the tool or by feel
recheck for TDC
spin the motor around a couple times to ensure you really, really did set everything at TDC

assembly is the reverse of disassembly

Default beige 944

The first time I drove a 944 at the dealership (which must have infected me) was the identical car. Love that color and you should be commended for keeping it in such great shape. Good on ya.
