Default Torque Tube noises

How do you narrow down a torque tube noise vs. a transmission noise? Car is a 86 944 Turbo.

torque tube noise sounds like a coffee grinder when you let off the gas in lower gears and decelerate. trans makes a mix of whirring noises normally

That is exactly what mine sounds like.

Any fear in driving it that way for a while?

Okay so my car doesn't make any noise on deceleration. It only makes it under load after the trans is warmed/hot. It will make it a lot. I'm guessing that its not the torque tube and points me to replace the trans.

You can try to isolate it further by unbolting the coupler between the TT & transaxle. Slide it to the rear and start the car. If you do not hear the noises you have listened for, your assumption is correct.

My TT is making the "coffee grinder" sound you described. I don't want to threadjack, but is there any risk to driving it as is for a while? I assume that the bearings are toast, but since I'm dropping the trans in a few weeks I would prefer to save the work for a "while you're in there" job.

Unless you know which clearance rating your TT bearings are, you are in the dark because a C4 bearing will whine more than a C3 bearing. Also another factor is weather your TT bearings were packed in high temp/performance grease or not. I have C4 packed bearings on the shelf for when I go to redo mine. The C4's are hard to find and expensive, while the C3's can be had for a dime and in my experience last longer, C4's just whine a little more. My $0.02

mmmm coffee

i thought my bearings were shot in my TT cause I kept hearing this squeeking sound from the TT. So one day I bought new bearings ($150 944online) and was all ready to try and change the bearings but before I did I saw a post that said to check the coupler, so I did. The coupler turned out to be my problem due to one of the bolts not all the way bolted in.

So just in case check the coupler lol
