choosing the right Porsche 944 for fun, daily-driving, or hard-core "restore..."

roads around here arent much better, but then there are some nice ones around.. the N/A is destined to remain a DD, while the 951 will resume duty of making me grin like an idiot... if it ever comes back together...

He could have flown me down, paid for two nights in a nice hotel, bought me dinner, given me $300 and still saved money. We roll our eyes when we talk about this guy--that's why I'm glad we're not close...!

In that case, I could be a runner up. I spent a ton of money right away on my car who I bought from a fellow club member. He pretty much stopped driving the car and put on less than 3000km in just over 3 yrs of driving. With that much sitting time, I took it to a shop straight away (mostly for getting it safetied) Wayyyy too much risk to just say.."it should be ok" due to lack of mileage, but I know that time can wear on parts just as hard as mileage. Car is great, but I learned a huge lesson about taking a car to a specialty shop that loves 944's, but is more used to working on $100k P cars with owners who have no issues writing blank checks to get work done.
All genuine Porsche parts, and parts where replaced with a "while your at it" dealer type attitude. I walked out $6k lighter. Not including the new wheels/tires. Great car though, and starts and purrs like a kitten. Got it easily appraised for $12k (I didn't want it appraised too high in order to keep the insurance price down)
Makes me kind of glad I didn't find a 911 I liked because I would have likely spent the same kind of money, but with a much larger entry price!

It's not about the money to me because whether I'm near the car, working on it or driving it, the feeling surpasses all money spent. I spent $4800 and now $4000 in parts sitting around and more to follow, which doesn't bother me. I'll do it now while I have the money.
And come next year, being 25 years old, I can insure for a an appraised/fixed up price. Might cost more in the long run for the insurance but I'd get back more than the original book value.
I say, just live it up. Love your 944 whether an NA, turbo or whatever. It might take some work, but she'll love you back!

You should bring your car out to a PCA Auto-X this year. We need more 944s. I'm sick of being the only one!

Oohhh. While you're in there, you can do a rear main seal and pilot bearing... then a nice aluminum flywheel - maybe a KEP pressure plate and clutch. Also a new TO bearing guide tube. Might as well freshen up your CV joints and put in a sem-solid tranny mount, too.

stop it stop it stop it stop it stop it lol
I'll do a disc, a resurface on the plate/flywheel, pilot bearing, the RMS and a new TO bearing. I'll probably do the trans mount mod, too. This is my 944S NA car, and I don't need to go overkill to contain all 188 horsepower, aaand I'm only driving it as my beater now! it has to end somewhere!
Fortunately I have an uncle and a cadre of his friends who do NASA GTS in 44's, and there are parts cars everywhere.
I'm already collecting just about everything you listed above for the Turbo, though. I've got a new Cup pressure plate to start, and I'm going with the 930 disc. I'm not positive it needs it, but it does have 86k miles on it and I have to do the rod bearings, so I'm using WYATIT as an excuse to do a clutch!

The best way, IMO, to handle 25 year old Porsche ownership is:
#1. Pay cash for it...
#2. Treat repairs as a car payment for about 3 years @ $200+ per month
#3. Keep $1500 in a Porsche emergency bank account
