It's not the back up light that's possibly illegal. It's the turn signal. Check your state's traffic codes as a bliking red light to the rear, or front may be illegal.

They can't pull you over for all red tail lights because lots of cars come that way from the factory. Ok maybe not lots, but some do. The only way you could get pulled is if you put your car in reverse and they notice that you have pink reverse lights.
Case and point for all red tail lights from the factory....

Dat is a vedddddy gooood Qvestion.
Does it matter. Even if it was and the cops kept pulling you over it would be annoying.
Got pulled over once in the Lincoln because my "A tailight is out"
No Tailights were fine. Some of the red plastic lenses don't have bulbs because they are glued to a flat piece of chromed plastic and aren't supposed to light up.
First time I had a cop who knew he was really wrong but couldnt admit it and got flustered.

Tons of GM cars came with all-red rear taillights. Heck, a lot of them used basically the same lense for the taillight, brake light, and turn signal. I'm thinking those early '80s Grand Prixs? And I know there have been some later cars will all red taillights.
