Man, just paint them if you want to paint them. Don't worry about getting "pulled". No cop is going to pull you because your tail lenses are red, because -- get this -- he WON'T KNOW it's not factory.
Really, how many cops do you think will say, "Holy cow there goes a 944 and he painted his tail lenses let's get 'im!"
I've had mine painted for quite a while and haven't even been pulled once, ever. On top of that, I (until my PS went out) had been driving with an old registration sticker on the plate for several months because I couldn't find the one I got in the mail. I accidently came close to cutting off a cop even a few weeks ago, nothing serious, but he sat behind me for a moment then went about his business. Red tail lenses, expired plate sticker and all.
To each his own.
Honestly, if I was going to do it over again I'd at least leave the back-up lights unpainted.

While I agree that most cops won't know the differance to know if they were originally red, the fact that some cars come stock with all red does not neccesarily make it legal. Most cars come stock with 3 pt. seatbelts, but it is illegal for me to swap the 2 pts in my mustang out in favor of 3 pts.
BTW, i like the white backup light.

I like the look of the all red. I would consider doing only the signals red (ala late 90s audi/bmw)but then again I really like seing a 944 signal from behind, in it's original color... Call me weird.

I could careless if its legal or not, I just wanted to know what ya'lls opinion was.
I'm definately goin with all red. It looks too good with the color of my car, imo.

I'm torn b/t what Ahmet says, and the ALL-red look- mine's zermatt silver, and I think it would look great either way- is your's silver or gold (maybe rose metallic)?
Also, I was going to say that about the 968's all-red, but I got on here too late. Did the 968's have a white reverse light though?

OK, I'm gonna elaborate on my earlier position and show my age all in one shot. Most of the cars on the road back in the 60's, 70's, and even 80's had all red taillights, on the 60's and 70's cars the reverse light was often a seperate unit as opposed to being part of the taillight. European cars, which aside from VWs, were ALL status symbols at the time (maybe not the little sports cars either, but they got their own respect). European cars had amber turn signals which set them apart from the masses. Through the 80's the American car companies let the all red lenses grow until some cars had a red plastic stripe around the rear end, pretty ugly if you ask me.
As far as legality goes, (keep in mind that laws vary from state to state, YMMV) reverse lights were an option on most cars until the late 60's, they became standard equipment due to demand, not legislation. The result of this is that NJ, which has the most stringent inspection program in the nation, does not test reverse lights because they are not required equipment. Painted turn signals are illegal here, but I doubt anyone would catch it if you did a nice job.

Three Wheelin'
I agree with Matt, Dave, etc.
Once, after I was pulled over, the cop stuck his head in the window and asked (dead serious by the way) if the vehicle was "equipped with a speedometer from the factory..." He'd never pulled over one before, and didn't know if we "used the tach or something."

daaaaaave.... must i remind you that most 911's have a stripe of red all across the back?
i think it fits the 911... but most of these huge old american cars - its just too much.
i love the look of stock taillights, at least ones that are in good condition.

Which does the rear of a 944 most resemble, a 911 or one of those big old American cars? (if you hadn't guessed, I'm not a fan of the aftermarket piece that fills in between the tail lights either) The pre-wraparound 911's are my favorites!

I have whole red ones in my car.I have disconnect the reverse lights, because light is red.I have blinkers also in the reverse light section. Also my original blinkers does not have amber light anylonger, light flashes red, even though i am using the amber bulp.
For finnish yearly inspection i have an original pair, since painted tail lights are illegal here in Finland
