Default 4x4 block in road.. killed exhaust and oil pan ??

upon relocating the 2nd P-Car (83 944) from Los Angeles to Texas, I was 2 miles from the new home and all of a sudden a big block of wood appears from beneath the vehicle in front of me.

No where to swerve, all I could say was " This is gonna hurt " . Looking in rear-view mirror, saw chunks flying out after a big "clunk". Instantly pulled over.
Looked underneath and all looked OK except for a major exhaust leak, oil pressure was OK as well.

drove it to the corner store, then home. After sitting the night, a huge puddle of oil appeared. So, I guess I cracked the oil pan.

Money is tight right now, so I guess I will throw it up on blocks in the backyard until I can gather all the " While I'm in there parts " .

I have been wanting to remove the manual rack anyway, since it's so stiff that you have to force it back to center.

So, to all my North Texas peeps, who wants to have a wrenching party ??

Similar thing happened to my '90 cab. Just after getting all maintenance up to date my dad took it for a drive and ran over a truck tie down (metal with big hook) he could not avoid it as to the right was a car stopped and left was on coming traffic. The tie took out bottom of oil pan and some of the air dam underneath. He pulled over immediately and called a tow. Surprisingly the driver came back (to pick up the ties he had dropped along the road) and my dad got his insurance info. He did not want to pay the estimate I came up with (I do most work myself) and wanted to get his own estimate. He found that his estimate was about $4500 more than what I was asking. He believed all that was needed was a new oil pan (he was thinking chevy price). I wanted new rod bearings as there was no telling if they had been compromised. He wrote a check next day.

That sucks man. I have seen JB Weld solve some incredible automotive problems though. I had a buddy that managed a cracked block in his Ford Ranger for about a year and a half with regular re-applications of the stuff.

I'm in Fort Worth and very new to the 944 world. If you ever have a project going on during the weekend, I'll come out just to get some time learning the car.

When you say remove the manual rack are you swapping it out for a power rack??? If so let me know, I want to go from power to manual and I also have extra oil pan if the JB weld lets you down.

Cool avatar btw.

good luck with the JB weld. i knew a rennlister who cracked his racer's transaxle case and JB welded it...no issues for several years.

JB weld really? You going to put a soda can with wire around the hole in the exhaust, or JB weld that too? Why not fix the pan the right way? Eh' I guess when you sell the car, we'll read about it in a PO horror story thread.

with a name like 'HICK' i would think you could appreciate such things..

but your concern is not unfounded. but a small crack doesnt necessarily put the pan out of condition, i think this is a bandaid until it is feasible to spend a day to replace the pan

That seems like it's accessible enough for a guy to TIG it shut permanently, up on a rack.

i'd pull the pan and have it tig welded or replace it with a pan that xsboost90 had offered. jb weld is a temporary fix to a permanant problem. i wish you the best of luck with it and hope that it seals the crack well! keep us updated on how everything turns out!
