Default Lifter Noise after valve job

Happy Labor Day everyone. Out for a drive one Sunday evening coasting along @ 20mph (just let off the gas) and lost the timing belt (age got it) and of course this act resulted in bending all the exhaust valves. Head off the car and to the machine to have the exhaust valves replace the guides replaced (all eight) and planed. Of course the intakes were cleaned and the seats redone) along with the seals replace. Head back to me and after numerous gears, rollers, gaskets, busted knuckles and help from my son and a good friend, the engine started up and ran smoothly and seemed to be ok....except for the lifter noise. My question is -- what is the issue? I don't think anything was done 'special' to the head or valves but can not verify today (have to ask on Tuesday). All thoughts and ideas are welcome. Cheers, Ed

Lifters should "pump up" after a while of running. Might take 15 or 20 minutes at idle.

It is possible for the paper gasket between the cam housing and the head to be installed up side down so that the oil port is obstructed/covered by the gasket, preventing flow to the cam bearings and lifters. The gasket will likely break through under higher than idle pressure, but something to look into. The gasket should run flush between both surfaces along its length. I can do a match up on spare parts if you have your doubts about your install. Pull one of the access plugs and look for oil flow.

Default Hi

Thanks for the input.

Started the engine up and let it idle for 10 minutes or so. The lifters did 'pump up' and the engine ran quiet, smooth without miss or shake (WOW!!!) and sounded great. Then as I am sitting in the drivers seat feeling like a drive in is order the oil pressure gauge went to zero. Stopped the engine, removed one of the cam housing plugs to verify oil was indeed in the area. Started the engine again and did verify oil was in the cam housing but the ticking came back and the pressure never did return. Turned the engine of pushed the car back in the garage and back up on stands. So looks like the oil pump is not pumping properly.

Any ideas?

Make sure the front crank pulley bolt is tight to 155 ft-lbs. The pump drive splined spacer is captured in that stack.

Thanks again everyone. As luck would have it the crank stack was not proper. Everything is good now and the car is now running better then before. Cheers
