About 4-5 months ago my 1987-944S started having a clicking noise under the dash in the vicinity of the glove box.I also noticed that the cooling of the AC was not what it once was.I went about the normal process of trying to figure out what was wrong.I replaced the water control valve above the oil filter because it was leaking, still had the noise.I removed the climate control unit and unplugged and plugged the connectors several times, still had the noise.I replaced the AC relay, still had the noise. Then I removed the glove box and figured out which relay was clicking but still could not figure out why.Today I started to look for possible vacumn leaks and bingo!!On my car in the engine bay on the firewall are some vacumn lines,1 of these lines feeds the vacumn to the water control valve that I had replaced. It turns out that the valve never had vacumn so it was in the open position, and the clicking noise was because of the vacumn leak. After putting in a new vacumn line,no clicking and it cools very well!!Don't overlook the simple things when doing your diagnostics! This vacumn line on my car is on the firewall, behind the head kinda towards the battery side.I hope this can help some others.

The vacumn line had come apart, what I mean by that is this is one of the lines that starts off being rubber then a hard plastic line is inserted and then it went into a rubber T.The hard line had pulled out and the rubber elbow was all dry rot from years of engine heat.It also looked like someone had played with this before because the plastic line was orange in color, all the other plastic lines are black.

Thank you. Seriously. You've just added a useful piece of information to the collective body of knowledge of this community. The climate control system on these cars is notoriously troublesome, as you've experienced. Now we've got one more item in the collective troubleshooting file to help ourselves & others.
I've long wished that other people would take a few moments to share their "here's what worked" stories. It'd make this board even more useful.

When I am sucessful I like to share, just not sucessful that often!!!!!!!Just kidding.I would like to ask a follow up question, for you guys that are in hot climates how often do you use the recirculation button for the AC? I noticed yesterday as I was driving around that when I used the recirc button it cooled even better, which it should because you are not drawing in outside air,but the owners manual tells you should only use for a short time to avoid windshield fogging, what do you guys think? Thanks

Great write up. My car suffers the exact same symptoms. I have located the orange plastic vac line which goes into the bottom of the rubber "T". Question... what part did you replace? Only the rubber elbow attached to the opposite end of the plastic line? If so, where did you buy the part? I realize this is an old post, but if you are monitoring I'd appreciate any follow up. Thanks in advance!
