Since it's almost spring <img src="graemlins/jumper.gif" border="0" alt="[jumper]" /> I hope to do some road trips soon. How far have you guys/girls driven your cars and what are some things you did to prepare for the long drive. What items did you keep in your car just in case.
Thanks,

A whopping hour and 45 mins down to Jersey.
I think I'll be heading up to Rochester in a few weeks though.
What I'd recommend:
Bring tools! Nothing excessive...I just bought this $10 kit of like 25 sockets & a ratchet from walmart...obviously not good quality but its a nice small set and I'm gonna take it with me whenever I go somewhere. Tire pressure gauge couldn't hurt. Oh...and of course a couple quarts of oil just in case.
Hmm I'm not quite sure what else...I don't expect my baby to fail me.
I'm gonna be getting a bra (for the car!) before I head up to rochester to prevent excessive rock chips.

Well, I got a rider on my insurance that covers towing up to 100 miles. Living in Tucson, that's far enough to reach most of what I want to reach. There is a WHOLE LOT of nothing out here, so I carry a celphone. Nothing like being stranded at 110 degrees with no shade.
When I lived in upstate NY, 100 miles was as far as I usually had to go; within that radius was Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo, Elmira and a whole lot of pretty country (at least for three or four months out of the year)
For long trips, I would recommend the standard retinue of stuff: Flashlight, duct tape, modest selection of cheap wrenches, a quart or two of oil, make certain your air pump works.
Hope this helps
Bob S.

I live in Iowa. I have gone to Parades in Portland Or, Sacremento, Mt Tremblant. Those qualify as some of the longer trips. I carry a bunch of tools but that's really because the car is the best place to store them. I don't think there is really all that much to carry that is really necessary. I carry a heater clip as a fetish to keep it from breaking. All the fluids are really readily available most anywhere. Oil filters are not so I usually take one too. Just make sure your normal maintenance is up to date.
The things I take beyond the ordinary (lug and torque wrench, mini air compressor) are more for track days than really necessary.

I've driven from massachusetts to southern il, about 1100mi. I can say the 951 was the most comfortable car i've ever driven for that amount of time, I drove for 18 hours straight. I've made that drive in a 2000 sable, not bad but not as comfortable as the 951.

My first road trip in my '86 951 was 1,500 miles from Seattle, WA to Los Angeles, CA along Pacific Coast Highway 1. I was living in LA at the time, and I flew to Seattle to buy the car.
I have to say that was the most glorious 3 days (yes, I averaged 500 miles/day since I was short on vacation) that I have had with my car. This was before I really knew how much one could spend on maintaining and restoring a Porsche (ignorance is bliss!).
I'm now living in Chicago, and when I buy my next P-car, I will probably source it from the West coast. Although the salt-free roads are one aspect, I figure that it will give me a good excuse for another cross-country road trip.

Never leave home without a gallon of anti-freeze / coolant and a section from a cardboard beer case. Ya never know when a crucial gasket is going to let go. I made it back from the Talledega 500 a few years ago with that fix (9 hours).

You guys are too scared of your cars destroying themselves (I've owned my 951 for 3 months
). You need to say reassuring things like "My porsche is the most reliable car i've ever driven."
Happy motoring.
