i've driven the distance from orange county, california to corvallis, oregon three times now in the past 6 months in my 1984 944. of course i'm sure to make sure everything checks out before i drive my car for the almost 900 mile journey. these cars are very dependable if taken care of properly.

My brother-in-law and I brought my first S2 Cab from San Diego to Seattle in eighteen hours. Needless to say we had great fun in the California desert.

Unfortunately this S2 is now a parts car :-(((, the replacement having been shipped via DAS last month :-))

What I remember most about the trip (besides the thunder storm in the S. Oregon mts. at 80 mph at one in the morning) was the utter comfort of the S2 during the trip. I was amazed at how I had none of the normal driver-seat exhaustion that is usually the result of such a trip.

The most important thing to bring on such a trip, by the way, is a great big smile :-)))

How is the Sparco on long trips?

How is it getting in and out (for short trips).

How is driving with the 4-point?

I ask because I think I am going to get your setup.

I live in Cary (really close to Raleigh) NC, have driven to various beaches in NC (~100+miles), to Rhode Island, Orlando, Daytona, Miami, New York numerous times, longest trips probably being 860 miles or so to miami, which is probably 10 miles shorter than to Providence Rhode Island.

I've driven my 86 turbo acquired a couple of months ago, from Chicago back to Cary, which was about 950 miles driving on interesting roads...

I took my 86 951 from PGH to Long Island, and to a wedding in MD. No problems. In high school I took my 79 924 to Ft. Myers Beach--with two passengers--for Spring Break.

I went from southern jersey to Boston to Lime Rock back home all in one day sitting in a Momo race seat. This was a constant 80-85 mph with a stint at about 100 on route 287 in NJ. This was following 3 other cars.

Very comfortable without problems.

Yup! I agree--I am usually uncomfortable after an hour in the driver's seat. Not with my 14-year-old Porsche's seat! Very supportive, and comfortable for over 4 hours.

There is no substitute!

I drove my car 1200 miles from Houston, TX to St. Paul, MN when I bought the car. Stopped for about 2 hrs at my brothers in the middle. Didn't have a problem. Don't think I'd reccommend that, though. You could get in big trouble if you're buying a car and trying to drive it back.

In about the 8 months I've had my car I've driven it for 5 B&B weekends away upto 500 kms each way, only twice out of the ten drives did I actually stop during the trip.

The most memorable trip was when we left a B&B at 6am with almost no cars. I was driving at 120 km/h around the speed limit when a concourse looking Alfa Romeo spider jets past me. I followed him most of the way home doing from 150 km/h to 170 km/h most of the way. So much fun. It took us about half the time it took to get there almost exactly.

Don't ever tell my girlfriend but half the fun of B&B weekends is getting that car on long trips.

I carry a couple of spanners and pliers, coolant and water, but nothing has been needed yet. I'm with Type_LT, you have to be a little more trusting of the car (he says, knowing he's going to blow the engine on the way home tonight after that comment).

Drove my 951 over 1 hundred miles a day going to and from work for almost 1.5 years. Also road tripped from San Fran to Reno a couple times. Did a cross country from Cali to Colorado and back once (1,300 miles each way in 5 days). 35k miles in under 2 years as a daily driver (when it wasn't broken) in Chicago snow for the last 6 months. Still sold it for more than I paid and enjoyed every minute! It was actually pretty reliable and drove as well at 124k as it did at 90k. I need a new one soon - getting the summer itch.

When I bought my 1984 944NA I drove it from Ft. Lauderdale, FL to Martin, Tennessee. The total trip took a little over 14 hours and I drove it non stop. The trip was a little over 1100 miles. The cell phone and credit card were the two most important items I had with me. That and lots of coffee and munchies.

When I purchased my '86 951 last year I was living in Newfoundland Canada. The car was in Minneapolis, so my wife, son and I flew there, and after a thorough PPI and a few repairs, we drove all the way in about a week. One stop to have the new timing belt re-tensioned, and an oil change, and not one problem. I too like to be optimistic about reliability!!! Since then we've done several road trips....and we've moved to New Brunswick. Right now we're planning to drive to Montreal in June for the F1 races.....anyone lese going to be there?

As for tools, etc....I keep a spare quart of Mobil 1 synthetic, a mini compressor, and a few hand tools.....and my cellphone (just in case!)

<img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

Happy motoring!!!

I drove my first 88 Turbo home from Rochester NY to Harrisonburg VA. About a 9 1/2 hour trip. I drove my second p-car, an 88 Turbo-S from Chicago IL to Harrisonburg VA. Took me right at 10 hours (for a 13 hour trip ) I've took my first P-Car to Jersy, to the beach in NC (bout 6 hours away), to VA Beach (4 hour) and to many trips to Blacksburg (2 1/2 hour) and into PA, D.C., Maryland and such (all between 2 - 4 hours away). I'm not afraid to drive my car places, that's for sure.

Well.. I drove my 951 from Cincinnati to Jersey 4 times, Cincinnati To Atlanta 3 times, Atlanta to South Carolina once, Cincinnati to Columbus/Cleveland 3 times, Cincinnati to Eau Claire WI.. about 2000 miles round trip, and Cincinnati to Athens OH close to 20 times, 300 mi round trip. Never once did it have so much as a hiccup, it always brakes in the driveway!

As for what to take.. definately a cheap set of sockets, screw drivers, wrenches. They fit in the cubbies in the rear with a quart of oil and a filter. I also have a 1 foot section of heater hose and a few hose clamps. I run 17's, so no need for the compressor and tire, so I store the goods in there, and the 8" kickers go in the cubbies!

For the comfort, it was better than the Benz C280 I was driving for a while. I had that back and forth from Jersey and Cincinnati. I'd much rather drive my 951!
