Keepin' it clean

not letting people ride in it and getting my carpet dirty
and ive found that, even parking outside exclusively, dirtyness is directly proportional to how close you are to sprinklers

Well for starters, nobody is allowed to eat or drink inside the car. Outside, the car gets a wash at least once a week, a wax once a month, and a clay once a year. I'm also **** about cleaning the brake dust off my wheels after every drive..

Simple, don't drive it.
I used to be the most **** person I knew about keeping the car clean. Now that I've got a family, I can either spend my spare time making something look pretty, or making something different perform better.
When I was a freak about it, no food or drink in the car, washed weekly, waxed monthly, polished and waxed quarterly. Used various stuff, either McGuires or Mothers for the soap, McGuires waxes and polishes exclusively. I liked it best before they went to the Gold Class, as they had a 3 step wax - cleaner, polish, and wax. I haven't found it anywhere in a while. I tried Zaino Brothers once - incredible shine, but it was about as durable as a Kleenex in a Monsoon. Probably good for a show car, but horrible for anything that is driven. For the interior, I used McGuires plastic/rubber/vinyl cleaner as it supposedly does not contain silicone, and Lexol leather cleaner and conditioner. I used compressed air to blow out dust around cracks and crevices.
Having said all of that, my wife drives me absolutely nuts. I make it absolutely clear in no uncertain terms about food and drink, and as soon as I spend all day (literally 8 hours), she comes home the next day and leaves a cup from something in the car. And wrappers from letting the kids eat in the car.

like above - I would not allow food in the car, no drink - I was glad and happy about this since car has no cup holders to begin with!
would wash the car about once a week
my paint isn't that great though, after every wash car looked so nice and clean and I'd be happy
inside - I used those armor all wipes, worked fine for me - and a vacuum

Check out www.adamspolishes.com. Their products will change your life and your car!!! Unbelievable stuff. They have step by step videos to show you the process. It is way more than detailing, it is paint correction. Trust me, their stuff is exceptional.

67King, if you are talking about the Meguiar's Deep Crystal system (3 steps: cleaner, polish, wax), it's what I use and you can order it online on Amazon!
I haven't tried many different brands, but I used Meguiar's clay kit, ScratchX for micro scratches and the last 2 steps of the Deep Crystal system (polish and wax). The (original) Indian Red was brought back to life, it's amazing!
Of course, as most others have said, no food or drinks in the 944...
And if it is not your daily driver, using a car cover makes a big difference.

Smacking my dash around with your backpack or rucksack also gets on my nerves too.
I do allow the GF to put her feet on my Jeep dash though.

I have to clean my car every time I get home. I live around all almond orchard's, so everything is very dusty in harvest, bugs, etc.... When I pull it into the garage after a drive, I California Duster the car very lightly then use the quick detailer on the whole car. Clean the windshield of bugs, and wipe any dust off the rims. And the brake dust killssssssss me! I usually just let it build up them when have the rim off I clean it. The interior get's cleaned every two weeks or so. Well I constantly wipe it down while I'm driving because of the dust. Wax it about every month. Maybe a little earlier than that. I don't worry about my interior much. It never gets that dirty because it's not a DD. And anyone knows who ride's in my car, if they are caught drinking or eating. I will punch their kidney's out.
