Default N/A Max HP?

sorry if this is a frequently asked question but what kind of hp can the n/a's make? not looking for anything huge or loads of $$$ but i was just curious. Or are these things pretty much as good as it gets from the factory?

without spending a **** ton of money or going forced induction, about as good as they get.

chips apparently can get some gain, cams are available and are advertised as being pretty good, but they are so expensive that few people have bothered.

depends on how much money u wanna throw at it. i'm sure that if wrote a blank check to a master shop and told them to stroke it, all titanium internals, custom grind cams, big bore valves, from-scratch intake manifold and induction system, u could end up with a 250whp NA monster...

granted you'd be prob 50grand in the hole heh.

what about? stock intake is already cold air induction. things that suck about it:
1) barndoor AFM. solution: buy a MAF kit. cost $1000 give or take
2) 135 degree bend J boot solution: redesign the intake manifold and make a new one that's flow tested. cost ....upwards of 500 at least

potential net gain? 10hp?

Basically a "cai" is already in stock form. You might pick up a few horses by losing/replacing the cat with a hi flow.

A chip will probably net you the most gain for the most realistic amount of money, at least it did for me

The only thing the throttle response cam does is improve throttle response. It's purely a seat-of-the-pants thing and yes, it's worth the money.

+1 on chips. My '89 NA has a chip, but I don't know which one. Maybe someone else will chime in.

Cam it, its about all you can really do short of forced induction. Web cams are the ones to get.

The chips may help a little, but to be honest i can't tell the difference between the stock 88 DME i have and the 87 with an autothority except for the rev limit going up.

As Mike stated above, the throttle response cam does not add any power, it just makes the car feel quicker.

I think Weltmeister does make a chip for non-turbo 944's that is worth the money. Just do not get the "no name brand" Ebay chip, all it will do is slightly alter your powerband and possibly remove your rev-limiter. Worthless.

My best suggestion is to upgrade the suspension. It will be your best bang for the buck, you will feel the largest gains of performance per dollar, even if it is not an engine performance upgrade.

I've seen 250 hp engines, but the are "serious" - high compression, stronger internals to rev to 8k+, head work, intake work, fuel system work (carbs or stand alone), race gas, etc.

It would be far cheaper to sell your car and buy a turbo.

You can get to 135 whp without too much work on a stock motor. With some effort you can get 10 over that by doing alot of little things like chips, headers, MAF, maybe a cam. Once at that point you are really in the dimishing returns range where getting another 10 hp is very very very costly.

Dare I say... fiberglass bumpers? It's easy as 1-2-3!

Seriously, though, if you don't plan on hitting or being hit, that's a 50 lb. change right there.

If you want to get really serious, there's a world of fiberglass parts available from GTRacing (doors, fenders, hood...). And a lighter car will go faster in all directions!
