I own a Nautic blue metallic turbo car, I'll post some pics up later. the clear coat is peeling badly, I'm about to have it resprayed and I'm torn on color. Would it be blasphemy to have it done is black? At this point the only two colors I'm really considering are Jet black ,or the closest modern equivalent to nautic blue. The thing is, neither of them will be a metallic and since the nautic blue won't be "right" I'm thinking I'm just going to go with the deepest black I can find, along with gunmetal wheels.

I didn't see this chart posted earlier in this thread, so I thought I'd share it.
If only it had the production numbers for each color / year. That'd be sweet.

There were no factory pearl cabs, it was available only in 86' and is a very rare color (I've never seen a pearl white 86' in person, and nearly all of them were 951s). Nautic blue metallic (L Y5Z) is also very rare, available only in 87' and 88'. Ours cars were painted from the factory with Glasurit , and basically all of the factory 2 stage special metallics are NLA. This leaves those of us with rare paint jobs in poor shape in a tough situation.. I'm pretty decided on going for that super glossy, so-deep-you-could-fall-into-it black look.
Also, for those of you who didn't know, all non metallic colors in all years were single state paint, and all metallic "special" colors were 2 stage base-clear. That is why 25+ years later, we tend to see the solids faded and the metallics with peeling clear. Though not a hard and fast rule, due to the extra cost of the optional "special" metallic colors, almost all of the 86' metallic cars are 951s, and a great number of the late metallic cars were either turbos, S2s, or S cars in 87-88. As a matter of fact, a large number of the nautic metallic cars made in 87-88 were S cars, making a nautic blue turbo even more uncommon.
Being that my car is actually a turbo swapped car (and therefore part of the large majority of Nautic cars which had a 16 valve engine) I feel less bad about painting over it vs if it were a true factory Nautic 951 (which I have never seen in person.)

Take care,

My car was originally Sienna Red (a 1983 only special color) but a PO down the line gave it a bad maaco type job in guards red, overspray everywhere
Current paint: Faded guards red body (sienna starting to pop through, that's how thin it is) with rustoleum red bumpers/ plastidip valance. Can anyone guess what engine's sitting in the garage?
Paint I wish was still there. I think it's easily the best original red on a 944.
