Post Carbon Fiber Hood for 924/944/951

Crossposted from 944 Turbo & S Board

I contacted Fiber Images and VIS and got a reponse from VIS.
http://www.visracing.com/

I talked to Pak at VIS. At the bottom of this mail is the e-mail correspondance leading up to this.

We need 25 people and to give them a hood to build the mold off of. It will then be in the ballpark of $400/ea for the hood after that. We can probably negotiate this if needed (higher price, lower numbers).

He tells me this includes a fiberglass structure, which they are now laying up at the same time as the CF skin, metal inserts and a hood latch.

VIS typically makes stuff for the sport compact crowd (what some people here call the "ricer" crowd), but I've seen their stuff and it's very good. People I've talked to in the sport compact crowd also highly praise these products.

Weight should be
~15lbs

their existing app list:

Who's in for a "group buy" and who has a perfect hood they wish to donate to the cause (mine has a small fold in it above the shock tower area, so is no good for a mold).

>
>To whom it may concern:
>
>Hello, I own a Porsche 944 Turbo, and I among several other 944-series
>enthusiasts are wondering how to get a run of Porsche 944 carbon-fiber
>hoods from your company. The current carbon-fiber hood offerings on the
>market for these cars are from race-car suppliers; fit & finish are not
>great. I've seen your company's hoods on numerous sport compacts and I
>am very impressed with the quality and appearance.
>
>Please send me information on the process to do something like this, how
>many committed buyers are needed, etc.
>
>Regards,
>Ryan Carag

I don't have the money right now to afford this but I do have a hood sitting in my garage that I would be willing to donate. It is straight with no dents just has cracked paint.

Under $500? A CF Quality finish good enough that I can leave it unpainted? I'd be in!

Predator's interested! I have a small interference between my center hood braces and the throttle body on the LT-1. Have had to grind down the braces some-what to provide clearance. Would the carbon fiber hood not have the braces down the center??

so far 11 responses saying they are interested. i will call VIS again tomorrow to get the following questions answered:

- timeframe
- can they do an all-carbon structure
- how much will these two options cost/weight in quantities of ~10
- fiberglass structure, carbon skin
- carbon structure, carbon skin

- will the structure have the center bracing peice?

Has anyone ever weighed the stock hood, so we'd know what kind of weight savings we'd be in for?

i spoke with grant at vis (pak was out of the office).

- 125-150 for shipping ground shipping in contental us. it's a hood, so large item shipping. vis is in monterey park, ca for those who can pick it up
- it will take 6-8 weeks after prepayment from us is received
- they don't do all carbon because "it won't hold up as well". i don't buy this, but i'll speak to pak when he's in to get a 2nd opinion.
- rough figure is 15-25lbs, but this is not exact. i'll speak with pak to get a 2nd opinion.
- the frame will follow the countour of the original frame, including any center ribs for strength, unless it is deemed too difficult to make the mold
- if we don't get 25, they may be able to do 650-700 for qty 15
- the donor hood needs to be perfect. never in an accident, perfect fit.

let me know who's still in, and i'll update the list.

anyone live near monterey park, ca who could be do some face-face interaction?
