VR 944 PROJECT
#226
I was told by a friend of mine that I will need go modify the vr6 crank with a throw out bearing for the torque tube set up. What did you do inside the bellhousing to make sure everything works as it is supposed to? I am nearing the end of my parts collection phase, so it is time to start cracking on assembly. Just interested still in the tranny solution. Hope to see more progress soon.

Sorry so long since last post...life has been interfering with my fun, lol...I now have the lion's share of the machine work finished on the block. The displacement has gone from roughly 2.8 to approx 2.96 liters. Compression will be approx. 8.5 to 1.
Pics to be posted later today. (just minor stuff, okay?)

Are you sure they didn't say pilot bearing? I plan for everything from the torque tube forward to be basically VW, which will keep costs down and simplify most of the issues associated with this.

Here is the block, with one of the pistons sitting on top. The crank will be a stock VW item, as will the rods.
EDIT: Just noticed my Rennlist membership had expired...since this forum has been gracious enough to humor my mad schemes, not to mention letting me upload pictures, the LEAST I can do is support them, especially since membership is less than two bucks a month. Hell, I used to spend twice that much in a DAY on smokes...
This forum's membership fee is well worth the information gleaned here...

I probably did mean pilot bearing...Well, things have changed for me too. My mk2 longitudinal vr6 swap with a 944 rear end hit a road block. That mk2 car is now becoming an automatic vr6 swap for my wife. I bought a 944 to play with though, and have been daily driving it. I am tempted to start the swap process to a vr6 as I have 2 complete vr6 motor assemblies...I can't wait to see your car finished!

Updates would be awesome as I'm about to tackle a similar VAG engine swap. Your old pics are all gone, is there any way to get those back? It would answer a lot of questions I have.
For a pilot bearing, do you plan on using a standard needle bearing like you'd see on a 4cyl longitudinal VW/Audi engine? I'm not familiar with the VR6 to that extent but I believe it is 15mm.

I just found this thread and spent the last hour reading through it. Love it. Have a couple of 12v VR6 motors and have been thinking of getting into Porsche 928's but this swap is going to be done in my garage this winter. Keep up the good work. How close to being finished??

Not a great deal, I'm afraid, but I'm about to retire from the cop shop, so time will be much more available. Most of what I've been doing lately is stuff that doesn't show on the outside, but is SO important to the final result...fitting rings onto the pistons, filing the end gaps (tedious work, but worth doing right) on the rings to turbo specs, and installing the crank, pistons and rods.
Here are a couple of pics; pistons w/rings fitted, filed, and ready for installation; note the deep dish on the piston tops:
