Default Alfa GTV6 vs Porsche 944 in Jan 09 issue of Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car

The current issue of Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car has a nice 6 page article comparing and contrasting these two cars. It was discussed on the Alfa forums here:

I brought it up here: https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-...alfa-gtv6.html As a former owner of multiple GTV-6's and a 944, I can say the similarities are endless.

Edit: Just went to the noted alfa board - thanks for posting.

I've owned both; my GTV-6 was the last of 5 Alfa's I've owned, and I bought it new from Bobcor in Belmar, NJ. They painted the lower black plastic claddings silver to match the rest of the car before I picked it up. Awesome steering, great grip (with a lot of lean, like most Alfa's), great motor-and I had owned the previous Alfetta GTV (Mario Andretti limited edition with sport package and spoilers) so I knew the car pretty well. Loved the steering wheel. Damned driveshaft donuts weren't worth a damn. Lost a head gasket as well. Clutch went, drove it 100 miles matching the revs and ran four toll booths rather than stop! 944 is a better looking car.
85.5 944, bought with 20K miles. Still the nicest one I've seen-full power, heated full leather sport seats, the sways and shock package, Alpine white, Fuchs color coded with polished rims, full leather interior. Sold it at 120K for 2K less than I paid for it. Great handler, just lacked some motor oomph from the Alfa. First of 4 Porsches. I'll either get another Duetto or another Bertone GTV, but I wouldn't go GTV-6 again.

A little OT, but right out of college I owned the poor man's GTV.

Also my first turbo.

Well said. I agree with all of it, right down to the Duetto

I've been a subscriber for a couple years now, and Hemming S&EC is my favorite magazine. So many great articles in there about beautiful cars that are actually driven.

I very much look forward to reading it every month.

I've owned many Alfa's - a few gtv6's & still own a beautiful 164 24v. Alfa's are definitely all about soul...

There are similarities with the 944 & both have their positive and negative points, but overall the Porsche is just a more solidly built car & feels that way on the road. The alfa's engine is glorious and you "feel" the drive more, but the multitude of build quality and rust issues just make it far more of a headache to look after.

I don't believe I will own another gtv6 & I can't imagine wanting to sell my 951.
