Hey guys just finished the belts for the first time, YEAH YEAH!!!!!

I have one question, is the balance shaft idler suposed to touch the belt on the top (meaning between the tensioner and upper balance shaft)?
Thanks, Richard

I dealt with it when I pulled/replaced the head and will be dealing with it again now that I'm working on replacing the front crankshaft seal.

Just did mine by feel after replacing some noisy lifters, but ultimately had a P-shop check it, just to make sure. As it turns out I had it a little tight. Next time it will be spot on.

Factory manual spec is 1mm separation between the belt and the idler you are referring to.

So, is everyone retensioning at around 1K miles?

I've re-tensioned the belts twice in the last year that I've owned this car and this weekend was my first belt change. Not too complicated, but finding issues from the PO makes the job harder. Rollers and seals were original ('87 951), belts were in pretty good shape and the year cast into the water pump was '98. I had to remove the water pump because the PO had pinched a wire under it! I'm not absolutely sure, but I think it's the oil level sending unit wire - which is strange because there's no oil level sending unit in the oil pan (not even a place for it). When I pulled the water pump off, the end of the wire broke off. The only problem I've caused myself so far is I damaged the crankshaft main seal trying to get it installed - of course, it isn't available locally.

I'm probably going to get the wrath of RL, but I reused the water pump and I didn't use a gasket (Permatex Ultra Copper).

good question. i'm not sure aswell. my gates instructiosn that came with the belt say to check it after 3200 -4000 kms.

what's strange is that they have different recommendations for different countries... like it is says check it at 3000 kms for the U.S but 3200-4000 for Canada.
