It's also really hard to install, and not cheap. Probably $500 in material and $500 for install. I took a class on it and have done alot of work on simple surfaces. I've done a little bit of work on cars. I have a ton of this vinyl, which is also expensive, but all of mine is printed with graphics on them. Anyone want to buy the material, I'll do it for free. Could use the practice.

I'm going to get a really really big tube of heat shrink and melt that sukka on!
That vinyl stuff is amazingly cool though. I really would have done that if I knew about it before painting my car!
Next time....

* Where did you do the class (I'd be interested in looking for something similar here in San Jose)?
* Where can you buy the vinyl?
Thanks.

I took a short class at 3M headquarters. There's another company called Fellers that gives classes, that I think are a week long.
Large format printing companies sell the material.
It's not really shrinkwrapping. The purpose of the heat is to coax the vinyl to lay on curved surfaces by heating it to make it pliable.
Also, the stuff isn't that durable. It isn't very scratch resistant. Something like a tree branch or a bush that could normally be buffed out, results in a nasty looking gouge in the vinyl. You'd have to peel up and replace that panel.

could one theoretically apply a clear protective layer of vinyl (like the stuff 3M sells to cover bumpers and mirrors to protect from paint chips and UV) overtop of the initial vinyl to protect it? or is that just adding one more thing you'd need to replace if you got a ding or scratch?
also, does anyone know where you can have this process done? I've never seen a body shop or paint shop advertise it...
Thanks!
Ethan

yeah i would think with this stuff you should throw down the vinal then throw down that bumper cover stuff they sell to make it more durable.
That stuff withstands anything

It's not just flat black either, here's an example of some kids I know who applied "metallic pink" vinyl.

This is a perfect example. Nissan is paint. The Ferrari is a vinyl wrap. Note the perfect texture on the Ferrari. It's the new fad in Europe. Completely wrap the car in Matte vinyl. There is a guy on the 996 Forum who wrapped his Artic Silver 996 GT3 Mk1.
