Default 1984 944 Wetsand and Polish...Scary Stuff!

So I got a call from a local member of the PCA (I advertise in the newsletter) about his 944, he had it painted and wants some protection...well, after looking at the car, I knew I needed to do more than that!

He had the car painted at a technical school, as a learning project for the students...he paid for supplies and they did the work. Not a top quality job, but hey, it was cheap. He asked if there was anything I could do for the fact that they paint wasn't really shiney...well, I could, and I did!

It had some really nice Fuchs on it...they needed to be polished out BADLY, so I struck a deal with the guy, and got to work! Here was the process:

Wipedown all interior panels with Megs APC 10:1
Clean all interior glass with Eagle One Glass cleaner
Extract carpets 4 times to get rid of the mildew from a leaky battery box
Wipedown all interior panels with Optimum leather/vinyl protectant

Wash exterior with Megs 62/ 2 bucket method
Wetsand exterior with Megs Unigrit 1500
Wetsand exterior with Megs Unigrit 2000
Megs 105/LC foamed wool/rotary 1500
Megs 105/LC yellow pad/rotary 1500
Menzerna SIP/LC Yellow pad/rotary 1500
Menzerna IP/LC white pad/rotary 1200
Menzerna Micro Polish/LC white pad/rotary 1200
Meguiar's 21/LC black pad/1200

Polish out the Fuchs with Mother's powerball/Blue magic metal polish 4 times

Correct, the car was painted by students at a trade school, so they were "learning" how to paint. Overall they did an ok job, but there was a ton of orangepeel and quite a few runs and fisheyes.

The wetsanding job brought back a lot of the gloss and knocked down a lot of the orangepeel, however there is still quite a bit of orangepeel that cannot be sanded out since the paint has cured completely and was not shot very well.

The guy told me he payed $1k for supplies and got the job done for free...for $1k he's got paint on the car, and now it's all shiney!

they should be able to wetsand it down further. They should try a spot that is inconspicuous sand it flat (without so much finger gouging) then bring it back. If enough material is applied you can actually use 800 to start then come up with 1000,1200, 1500, 2000. Then use finessite II from 3m. They would be surprised at how much more depth there could be.
