Default Swap Idea: Volvo 4 Cyl Red Block

I did some searching and can't find any information on this.

I am curious as to what it would take to swap the 4cyl turbo engine from a Volvo 740T into a 944. The engine is pretty small so I wouldn't think it would be a space issue... Basically it's a question of how in general do you go about attaching the bellhousing/clutch assembly to the Volvo engine.

I'm aware that I would probably need to make some changes to engine mounts, and need to do some other type of engine management, but just curious if this can be done on the cheap side, doing all the work and not being in a rush.

Or has anyone heard of this being done? The reason I'm asking is if I have the two cars, and the Volvo engine will do 200-220hp with about 5$ of modification, if cheap it could be a fun project...

any decent machine shop should be able to make you one...

I assume the 944 flywheel would need to be adapted to the volvo crankshaft... somehow? How is that usually done?

I have a gen-u-wine 944 engine, freshly resealed, from my new wreck of an 83. And I live 10 minutes from you. And I kind of want a 740T...

Good so you can take the leftover body and put your nice 944 engine in it.

Yabo, I would love to see you do that. I would by a squirter block from a '93 up. This would be the best of all worlds red block reliability with the porsche looks and handling.

If I were going for best performance/reliability I agree. Fortunately or unfortunately, I have an 87 turbo (yes I know, weakest of the red blocks) that I just picked up for 200 dollars with a good strong engine. This would just be an option if I could do it for semi-cheap, throw a MBC on it and thats about it. Maybe build it up here and there. It would definately be nice to have 944T or more power with a more reliable building block.

Plus the the body on my car isn't terribly great, and not too much is original so It's not like it has a lot of value in the first place. Just would be a fun project... Guess I'm looking for something to do when my range rover project (almost 3 years now..) is done..

Any more tips or hints anyone? How much does it usually cost if I have a template of what I need, for a machine shop to make it for me?

how about driving the car. why look for projects, just drive the car a little and i am sure a project or two will fall into your lap.

that's why porsches (and land rovers too) are more fun than say hondas. little projects just fall into your lap with a porsche. those bastards driving hondas dont know all the fun they are missing.

I've driven the car for 2-3 years without anything major. I had the car off the road two-3 years if you recall when I pulled the engine, did the clutch, put the LSD trans in, swapped interiors, etc etc.

Car's are my hobby. and projects are what make up that hobby. In the meantime I could buy an old BMW like I've been wanting to.

I live, well when i'm not at school, on my parents farm so there is plenty of room to leave projects sititing around for a couple years. I'm 22, I have plenty of time to "just drive it" in the future.

I think a white block from an 850 would make the project much wort the time. They have a lot more potential. I would love to throw one of those engines in '93 945 T.

Rovers......damn. Had one that I loved but they're like mistresses.....they will do anything you want....but they're high maintainance. Even more so than 944's.

I think you should go for it. Or just turbo your car as is. F what everyone has said over the years. These engines are tougher than given credit.

Run the right fuel and anything is possible IMO.
