Default All Crank No Fire

My 86 944 will not start.
It cranks fine, but will not fire. I replaced the DME relay, no change.
The TACH doesn't "bounce" when cranking. Thinking maybe it is the reference sensor but am open to troubleshooting suggestions.
Thanks

Ian and Jaimie are getting an email from me over the lunch hour...!

Same problem with the beastie...!

I'll pick up a few things sensors, relay, etc. and hope that one of them solves the problem, the rest will go into the bin as spares.

Good luck with your problem, it's just part of the joy of nursing a 22 year old car!

I am going to unplug the ref sensor tonight, and check the connection. My connectors are brittle.
What pisses me off, is there was no warning. The car was running great up until this.

Default Ref/Speed sensor output check

Does anyone know of a way to use a scope or logic probe to check the output of the sensors at either the connectors of the sensors or at the DME connector?

Thanks

I replaced the male plug side on both Ref. sensors too; the wires were frayed and shorting. Check them. If no "bounce" then likely the sensor wiring or the sensors themselves. They are not cheap, so check the wiring first. Also, check the DME unit under the pass floorboard and look for water leaks there, etc. just to be sure.

I am almost positive it will be the connectors.
But then again I was almost positive it was the DME relay.
I am positive that the car doesn't start right now.

Mine drove me nuts! It was also the third time it happened, for no frigin reason! It's so frustrating. I opened the connectors with an exacto and they were very frayed right where they were kinked. you can actually get a new harness from Lindsey racing, but I just got some fresher used connectors from 944 ecology and installed those instead. Work fine now.

The damn connector fell apart in my hands.
It is the sensor end. Three bare wires with spade connectors is all that is left.
Just emailed george at 944 ecology. See if he has a sensor. Still focusing on that.

As long as they aren't grounding out on each other it should still work though... I ran mine like that for a bit.

Be careful with the replacement part, the lead is longer and can touch the exhaust. I was getting three laps in at the track before the car would start to cut out and backfire. Found the sensor wire melted causing it to short out. Just dress the extra length into the upper cable ties next to the fire wall.

Yup the procedure is in the manuals, even shows the expected waveform with the required voltage. In the 944 Turbo manual, pages 28-20 and 28-21.

Howdy, stranger! I'd bet the ref sensor/connections. Hope it all works out well. Also check the coil when mine would die, and not restart, the coil was also dropping out when hot.

Well as an update....
It was not the ref sensor.
Got a brand new one and installed. Nothing.
Cranks fine, but no start. The tach doesn't bounce when cranking, not sure if that matters.
I am getting sick of plug and play parts...DME and Ref sensor so far...
Could it be the DME?
