Default what is the widest wheel i can run without spacers? **bonus**show off your wheels!!

hello to all, new here and i have exhausted my searches on here.... i really cant find anything on the subject for the n/a... i think the n/a and the turbo are different, aren't they?.... please be kind, im new here.... but not new to forums... i know that searching first and asking last is the proper protocol. so here it goes.....

i have an 88 944 na track project, and an 83 944 na dd... i would like to run some nice 996 wheels that my friend has for sale... i am out of town so i cant just run over there and try them or i would. i would also like to know what the widest rear wheel you can/have run on these cars would be...pics?..lol...so is it possible to run a 18x11 rear without spacers on the 83? or 88? is there a big difference in the two cars backspacing-wise and wheel well depth? or are they the same? i really appreciate your knowledge here, and am humbled by the passion shared by others here for these cars. i thought it was just me, and jake ryan that liked the 944's lol.

anyhow... please post pics if you have them, and let me know what the specs of your wheels are plus a good reason to show off your wheels

thank you guys very much!

Eric

There is a difference between the offsets- they changed in 87. I have 10s in the back with no problems. There is a web page that addresses this question, maybe someone can post with it, I don't know what it is off hand.

what year is your car?

what size tires are you running?

i saw that you can run up to a 295 30 18 with no mods, but that was a newer 951.... is there a difference between the 951 and 944? if i can squeeze 19's that would be nice, but 18's are great too!

thank you alex!

Just my opinion, but 18x11 wheels on a non-turbo 2.5 is really too much wheel even if you do get it to fit (which is really dependant on tyre size and spacers). If you start talking to most N/A track guys 17" is really the largest you see out there, with the norm being 16 and 15. A good set of light 16" wheels with 245 tyres all-round would offer a lot of grip and still leave the car feeling fairly agile. Again, just my opinion. I had many sets of wheels over the years and this is the set-up that feels the best to me. Everyone is different though.

on the early car you can run the 996tt wheels w/ 45mm offset- youll need about 10-20mm spacers on the rear and about 1" on the fronts. I ran 1" fronts and 15mm rears w/ longer studs w/ mine....oh, but you'll have to roll the rear quarters on the front lip and i was running 525lb rear springs so hopefully they dont rub too much.

my 1988 944S with 993TT 18 inch wheels. 8 mm spacer on front to clear bearing caps...late offsets.

Anything over 17s you should upgrade your castor blocks to 968 ones.

Porsche states that anything over 16" requires uprated caster blocks.

tifo, was the 930 a significantly different offset than an early 944? i have 8" BBS wheels on the back of my early and at least according to the picture it looks like the wheels come out just the same to the fender...or maybe that extra inch is to the inside of the car?

The 930 9" Fuchs have (IIRC) a 10mm offset, and visually from the outside look a lot like 911 8"X16" fuchs in terms of lip depth.

I am running with 17" sport classics from the 996. They are 8 inches wide in the front and 11 inches wide in the rear, I think. In the back I do not need spacers but on the front I have a 1/4 of and inch spacer (its there to allow the center cap to fit the wheel).

ps Sorry no pics of my car on the comp at work.

my car is an 88. I am running 265/35/18, but really they should be 275s. 19s will be a little much for this car, IMO. They can fit, you just won't have much in the way of sidewalls. 18s are about the perfect balance I think.
