Default The Evil Snap Ring Colouring Book

This is a Porsche 944 N/A. It was made in 1986. It has an aftermarket exhaust system, and a crossdrilled crankshaft. It generates about 200 horsepower.

It goes fast.

Colour it black.

This is a water pump. It moves water through the engine of the Porsche. It makes the engine cooler.

It is very important.

Colour it silver.

This is a thermostat for the water pump. It is supposed to open when it gets hot, but it does not open very much at all.

It needs to be replaced.

Colour it silver.

This is an EVIL SNAP RING. It holds the thermostat inside the water pump.

It was designed eons ago in Hyperboria, by Nyatharlotep, the Crawling Chaos. It was placed in this world to destroy the souls of men, and to send them raving into the Outer Darkness.

Colour it light grey.

These are snap ring pliers. They are for removing and replacing the EVIL SNAP RING. They do not work.

The EVIL SNAP RING eats several of these for breakfast every day.

Colour them red and black.

This is big-*** socket. It can be used to push the EVIL SNAP RING into place once it is inside the rim of the water pump, after it has laughed at and devoured many snap ring pliers.

You should probably tell someone about this.

And colour it grey.

When I first read the title I thought it was another spammer.

Nice Lovecraft reference.

For what it's worth - the snap ring is, well, a snap, when the waterpump is out of the car. Naturally, all of the fuss comes about when people try to get that evil snap ring in or out while the waterpump is still bolted to the engine.

Just did this a couple of days ago on my girlfriends car. Made a very clear and conscious plan to install the new thermostat and snap ring in the new waterpump before mating it to the engine. May actually remove the waterpump in the future, if I ever plan to do just a thermostat. (Can't imagine that ever needing to happen though).

The socket is a nice idea for installation. Probably not too effective for removal...

Hey when you guys put the old snap ring in a new waterpump with a new theromstat, does the thermostat have a little wiggle room (back and forth not side to side)? It doesn't seem like an issue to me, but when I installed the new thermo in my new pump is had a little play, and yes the snap ring was in the grove.

My understanding is that there are two different gaps possible between the snap ring groove and the thermostat land. If I remember correctly, different o-rings are used to properly fill the gap. Visit Clark's garage for the specifics.

Wiggle is fine, I can still "click" mine by squeezing my upper rad hose. There was some sort of O-ring/gasket that I properly destroyed in the R/R fighting that I didn't bother to replace once I saw how secure that industrial grade snap ring keeps things!

Snap ring pliers are worthless. Use needle nose pliers.

I did a Renny members t-stat about 4 months ago... It honestly took me 5 minutes to get the old one out and new one in. I think i did the entire job in 1/2 an hour... I just used a pocket screw driver and a hooked pick, moved the snap ring so the gap was in the bottom, used the pick to lift the ring a bit and put the screw driver in behind the snap ring and worked it around. YMMV

Just make sure you wear eye protection when taking those snap rings out. In my experience they usually go flying across the garage for some reason or another into a nice dark corner with lots of spiders. I dont want to test my fate the day it goes flying into my face and blinds me though. Thats usually why i order two.
