Sid,
I have put it on her, very nice! Just can't leave it, until I get my damned parking spot back in the garage, grr!
Anyway, Kijo passed smog with flying colors, but then the DMV had to mess me over; they charged me for expired registration in April, when I bought it from a dealer in May, so I don't get it; car was supposed to be part of dealer inventory, so I shouldn't have had to pay the $42 in fines, on top of the other crap! Reamed me for $176!
I'm going to try and get my money back, girl was pretty stupid there.
Anyway, she's got a few new problems that just turned up: there was a wire that affected the ignition, had to squeeze those back; she's surging in power, started last night; and then the meanest: she went through half a tank in 90 miles! That is unheard of, normally get 27-30 a gallon. Started to get worse last night.
We'll get it nailed down; I'm wondering if the surging is from a leaking vacuum hose? We shot some carb cleaner there, and it did change tone for a moment. Lost the light.
Symptoms of a problem: when we took off the catalytic converter, on the pipe to #2 and #3 piston, the pipe outlet was white; from #1 and #4, it was black. Now with the surging, there felt a difference on how #2 and #3 were acting; any suggestions? Also posting this in a different thread, too wierd of a symptom/problem.
So, make fun of me for wearing gloves when I work on a car, I don't care! Usually have longer nails, anyway.
Laters, all! Gotta run

Hmmmmm
Lots of gas and surging? First thing I might check is the o2 sensor. What does the exhaust smell like.
Actually with that much I might suspect a leak in the fuel system. Watch out if it's underhood could be very bad

But I do not smell gas, so I do not know if that's what I was looking for, *sigh*
Kijo, no more 91 octane until you learn to sip your gas, not guzzle it! Be more lady like...

Kijo broke this afternoon, smelled gas inside/outside, everywhere, when I moved her 4 feet to quit being a parking space hog.
I had to go to work, so I have to look at her tomorrow. Wish me luck, this car seems to want me to know evey system she has.

"But I do not smell gas,"
"smelled gas inside/outside"
Er ahhhhhhhh
Sounds like a fuel line problem. Check around the Fuel filter, but since you had different problems on pairs of cylinders, also check Fuel regulators on the fuel rail.
Might be an easy fix.
Had a fuel filter conection go on my Lincoln driving from Montreal to NYC once. Got so bad that whenever we rolled down the window to have a ciggarette the smell of gas was overpowering. So we just stopped rolling the window down Until the fuel rate spilling was just to excessive to keep driving.

Sid! lol, that is scary! I remember when I was little, we had a clogged fuel filter outside of town, and it was on a Sunday. Car stalled. Dad dug under the hood, and finally figured out the fuel filter was clogged! So every two miles when the car stalled, poor dad would get out of the car, pull the filter, and then BLOW it out! He used a paper towel to keep his lips off of it, but he said he could still taste it, ew!

Sorry you had to do that, Harry. I think maybe keeping a small extension of a few different sizes of hoses could help keep that from being more of a problem, so we wouldn't have to put our lips on something that gross or unhealthy?

It looked like the #1 injector just failed, permanently open. She got worse the night before being smogged, and just didn't have any power. That was the only cylinder who's spark plug was black; we did a test with another spark plug, and it was black in 5 minutes, while the other ones where all white.
The car was drowning and choking lean at the same time.
When we pulled that injector, it just poured out gas, while the others didn't leak at all.
I am going to soldier on a replacement electrical connector, just because that one's metal spring broke off, but it was definitely running juice, and staying on.
Ignition system looks great, all sparkplug wires firing nicely.
The engine was shaking alot, and vibrating things, but it did that since day one.
Before we replaced the injector and put in Bosch Platinums plugs, we did a compression test on all; these were the results:
#1, 155-160 (obtained 160 after a few cranks)
#2, 160
#3, 160
#4, 160-163 (is the variance because of the (problems we had on #1?)
According to the book, the cylinders are all doing pretty good, with 145 psi being the lowest acceptable.
So, we just replaced the injector and all 4 plugs, and WHAM!
OMG, she IS a PORSCHE! I can't believe the difference, like a totally different animal. She'll toss you firmly back into the seats, and that's just an N/A...I know, 951s are faster, but hell this made a great step up!
Heh, I had thought maybe my memory of my other 944 was just a glorified memory, but it sure wasn't!
Still have a few bugs to work out, like possibly the oil cooler didn't seat right, hard to tell right now.
Thank you all for your help! I'll keep the updates coming. I'm going to take a few day break, and get back to it.

There has to be a place to get these as spares. I would think that every mechanic must have boxes of these types of clips lying around, because they are easily misplaced (or go shooting off the end of the screwdriver during removal).
Do you think the connector would come off without this spring clip? Mine stay seated on well enough without them, as I recall.

That one has been staying seated just fine! Um, I can't think of anyone who has any laying around.
I still haven't heard of a car passing smog with her problems - I am thoroughly impressed by the 944 in that situation!

Finally!! Congrats!. Looks like all the pesky problems on Rennlist are getting fixed lately!!
Its amazing how all of us worry about the worst possible occurence, just to be relieved that its "owner" fixable and not as expensive as "IT COULD" be..
we are all a little nuts afterall, think of our cars as an extension of ourselves.. mine looks a little sad at me when she lets me down!- as if to say "I'm Sorry.."

Wow, Chris, I think you have a point there: we are projecting onto our cars, like many do with pets!
Maybe that means we are young at heart, since kids normally do that, and these cars will keep us forever young?
I like to think so!
