Default push button start?

ok heres the deal, my ignition key lock cylinder broke the other day in my 87 944, and besides fixing it I thought hey it might be cool to put a push button start into the car. I was thinking that the switch panel right in front of the shifter(where the sun roof switch is) would be a good place for it. anyone have any thoughts on how to accomplish this. also pictures would be cool if anyones got them. thanks

is it the lock cylinder or the ignition switch? the ignition switch (at least on early cars) is a $5 piece of plastic that takes 15 minutes to install.

its the lock. the part that the key slides into with the tumblers. went to pull the key out and the tumblers came out with it. looks like the pin holding it together failed.

ouch- i would personally fix the tumbler- get a new one- push button would be a pain to install and make the car too "ricer" me thinks. Maybe if it was a fully stripped race car it would be ok.

I can actually help you if you want it... us racers have been doing this a bunch lately. You can find details on the spec and 944 cup forums.

Personally, I was just thinking about this the other day. I'd make it discreet, so it is not totally obvious since these cars are not particularly hard to get into. You wouldn't want it to be redundant, e.g. you put your key in the ignition and then push a button somewhere else. Regardless, it seems like you are going to need 2 switches- one to turn the car on (constant electrical systems) and one to activate the starter. Not having actually done it, I can't give you too much advice.

unless you want your car to be easily stolen theres no easy way to get around having to put the key in the ignition.

the easiest way would be to install a remote fuel pump disabler, which you could reactivate with a key fob.

other then that you could setup an RFID system which would be totally awesome but alot of work, or possibly a password protected system like in the transporter.

honestly, its not like your going to install a push button starter because it is at all useful or any more convenient. its just a cool gadget, so i would just live with having to put the key in the ignition

*edit*
check this password system out

and if i decide to go with the push button i will put some sort of safety switch, hidden of course.

I like how the 944 key goes kind of into the dash... Honestly if you want a button start thing go for it.. It could be kind of cool and add a little security from theft.

You need to turn on ignition first and then push the start button that activates the starter motor.

Just replace the lock.

dont give up. I think its a great idea. It wont be cheaper than a new key if you do it right but it will be better. I put a remote start on mine... which sound good but is not that practical really.

I think it needs some type of proximity circuit so that you have a button start but still have some security. It is a really simple idea, but does need some smarts behind it. There are a number of simple buttons on ebay if you search "(push, button) start".

I think it should be located where the key is or where the lighter is.

Keep on trying... its a good idea.

Thats how I wired my push button. Turn the key to ON and crank with a pushbutton mounted under the steering column. On my (later) dash, theres 2 semi circular cutouts in the back of the plastic cover that mounts under the steering wheel. What a perfect place to thread in a nice shiny button..
