I did the conversion twice with no problems whatsoever. The 951 transmission felt just fine for a street car in an n/a. In fact, I ran mine with 17" wheels and 275/35/17 tires for extra tall gearing that got me incredible MPG.

do the early cars have the holes for the late style beam that the trans hangs on?

Not on the 924S.

The early 944s, like the 924S, has a welded section of the frame where the transmount hangs from. Then 85.5+ 944s has a wimpy removable cross bar that is removable for the late mounts.

thanks lemming and lego

legoland, regarding mileage, how different in size are those 17's compared to stock wheels/tires?

as for mounting, ive devised a sort of bracket that will straddle the top of the differential coverplate. i have a piece of 3/8" aluminum plate and can cut it down to the right shape. the third missing bolt will instead be secured into the plate. ill post pics up when i get it cut down.

heres what i was talking about. now that i look at it it reminds me of the waterpump. anyways theres still 1 more hole to drill in the bottom of it for the third bolt on the mount to attach, it will be secured to the plate itself and then the stress from that mount point will be distributed through the plate.

pictured are the stock bolts but when the tranny goes in i have bolts that are 10mm longer to compensate for the plate thickness (3/8")

I'm doing the same swap but I have an S2 transmission sitting in the garage awaiting warmer weather. All you need is the crossmember transmission mount, and the only problem you might face is relocating the fuel filer/ fuel pump and fuel lines, as they are right in the way of that crossmember. I need new fuel lines back there anyway mine are a little hard, so it's not a big deal. I just hate working on fuel lines messy job.

Shift linkage was loose and under the boot, but it didn't matter since the ring and pinion was absorbed into the tranny. Violence ensues any time the engine runs and I put it into gear and let off the clutch. Porsche's nice enough to give me a BRAND NEW ONE from Stuttgart for ONLY 6500, and that's not including the shipping costs! I'd double the amount of money I put into my car! New ring and pinion set is 1100, and that's STILL not going to cover costs to replace each and every gear it's shredded inside. Good thing used trannys are -- and this is your price quote, Dan! -- 300 bucks. Even better if I can... borrow... the LSD tranny in my dad's driveway.

I need to have a working car sometime soon, he's gotta get down from Cleveland to make the swap. The S2 tranny'll be nice though -- just over 40k miles on it -- the majority of those miles are pretty tame, too! LSD would be neat, but taller 1st and 2nd would mess me up. I might get it towed tomorrow.
