Default Anyone using late tranny in early car?

I recently bought an '86 turbo tranny with oil cooler and was told by some members that the tranny would have appropriate provisions for the early style mounts. After cleaning the gearbox I saw that the turbo transmission has the appropriate 3 threaded bosses on the driver's side, but on the passenger side the differential housing only has 2 threaded bosses. I could swap the diff cover from my NA tranny onto the turbo box but then I would lose the oil cooler.

Is it safe to run a transmission with only 2 bolts holding it to the mount instead of 3?

This is a picture off the side of my NA transmission. The lowest circled bolt hole is not present on the turbo box.

2 bolts won't be strong enough. Well it might be, with an NA, under normal conditions, but how often is a 944 operated under normal conditions?

Does the 951 trans have the boss there? If so you could drill/tap it.

If an NA can run with no oil cooler on an NA trans, then an NA should be OK with no oil cooler on a 951 trans. So if you can't get a 3rd bolt on the mount, you can swap covers.

Maybe you could make an adapter plate that will essentially connect the 3rd mount hole to another bolt somewhere on the trans.

I had a late car (1986) with an early cars transmission in it 1984. There was a differnce in the way it was mounted, but it worked ok.

My speedometer didnt work however.

I'm aware of the different gear ratios intended to keep the turbo motor in the powerband, but this transmission is the first step on a project which will need to make use of those taller cogs

Can the later-style tranny mount be adapted to fit an early car?

What are you intending on doing? More horsepower? You are gonna be pissed with that turbo ring/pinion, believe me. I have a turbo transmission on my 944S. It really slowed it down....I can only imagine the effects will be worse with only 147bhp. You should try and find an S2 transmission, or an S.....unless you don't mind or are going to add alot of power.

V2 why don't you just run your n/a trans, if it breaks it breaks, they are cheap, if it doesn't then you have a faster car that gets on boost quicker

He addressed this in your quote there. The transmission is a first step on a project. Thus tall ratios don't need to be a worry here.

should be able to swap out the brace and it'll fit right in. I have a brace and a factory mount if you want. If i would have thought of it i would have thrown it on the skid!

Yes, that is what I had until I grenaded the 951 trans, now it has an S2 tranny mounted in it (which I like much better for the track).

Being a 924S, the car uses the old mounting brackets that connect directly to the chassis (the chassis is the transmission carrier). And yes, I'm running two bolts on one side and three on the other with no problems to date (YMMV and I did not stay at a Holiday in Express last night).

As for strength, doesn't the late tranny only use 1 (maybe 2) M8 bolts to support the entire tranny as it hangs form the carrier?

support beam has a bolt on each side near the wheel well, then two long m8 bolts that hang the trans.
