Default just changed oil... is this normal

normally i use 10w-30, and at nonrmal temp (inbetween 1st and 2nd bars), the oil pressure is at 2-2.5.
normal right?

well this time i put in 20w-50 and the oil pressure is at 4.
is that to high?

I use 20w-50, and my pressure is about 2.5 bar at idle, and almost 5 while cruising. I think that's pretty much normal.

For years the tech articles in Panorama (PCA magazine) have recommended 20W-50 on these cars, so no problem there.

Yeah, its just a heavier weight oil. Pressure is going to be higher. Same is if you used 5-20 or something, you'd see low oil pressure.

20w-50 but it depends how cold it gets where you are. there is a chart in the owners manual.

Huh, I just went and looked at the manual... I always used 20w50 myself for the driving season (no winters), never noticed the bottom bar in the chart before, though.

It looks like 10w30 and 10w40 oils that are classified "fuel efficient" (which is probably most oils, I'm guessing) are OK up to 100 degrees.

Here's a clip from the manual:

i read the manual and old posts on rennlist, thats why i switched to 20-50. and i knew most you all use 20-50 and people say their pressure is around 2.5.

i understand the thickness having an effect on the pressure, but 4 bar? and its only been 60-70 degrees latley.

so am i making a big deal out of nothing?

Are you getting 4 bar at idle? If so, that sounds a little high. But you never know if your gauge, sending unit, grounds, etc. might be causing a high reading.

yep 4 at idol, though after driving at kinda hard todday and it was a little hotter it dropped to 3.5 at idol.
and its pegged to the 5 when throttle is applied.

and i hope its not electrical. even though the readings were spot on with the other oil, what chances would there be of something suddenly going bad?

i run 20w-50 almost always-my oil pressure is 5 at idle when cold- drops to 3.5 when warm. Goes directly to 5 when i touch the gas. Lowest ive seen it was 3 when running hard on the track and then pulling into the pits hot. I wouldnt run less than 15w-40 in one of these cars. I'll be breaking my new rod bearings in on Shell Rotella 15w-40 hopefully in the next week.

Question oil additives?

Whats the consensus on oil additives? Worth it or waste of money?

Waste of money. Oil companies already add a bunch of stuff to motor oil, so if there was something out there that would make it better, I have to believe it would be in there already.
